@3scoutsmom , there is no provision in the law guaranteeing this scholarship for four years. Politics being politics, it could certainly be removed or changed in coming years. We are factoring this into our decision and making sure we can afford the FL schools my S18 has applied to (FSU and UM), even if the OOS Benacquisto is changed. We are also going to ask the schools to state their policy in writing as to how they will handle that situation.
Found this:
The scholarship is equal to the institutional cost of attendance for a Florida resident, less the student’s National Merit Scholarship. The bill provides that non-resident students receiving a Benacquisto Scholarship are exempt from the payment of out-of-state fees.
IMHO UCF’s NMF has been a school sponsored Scholarship in the past. The Benacquisto is a State sponsored scholarship. I would imagine that it would be between the student and state. The future NMF,s coming to Florida schools is going to be a lot more than the State has allotted for.
Time to roll out a popular Internet meme…
:-h All Your Bases (NMFs) Are Belong To Us (Florida)! :-bd
@vistajay Based on how the schools handled the 100% BF change in 2017, they likely will not put anything in writing until they get direction from the state. :-w
UF Honors vs UCF Honors, UF Engineering vs UCF Engineering, UF COA vs UCF COA and their NMF recruitment program, UF location vs UCF location and UF Ranking vs UCF Rankings? Any experts out there?
Here’s one tidbit we learned at UCF - when your NMF commits, they put aside the entire 4 years worth of funding for them. It won’t matter what the Florida house/senate/governor might do in coming years. That is the difference that will keep us from seriously considering UM.
Florida Governor’s office lists the SB 4 Governor’s Due Date as 3/21/2018. I figure we will know before then.
FYI - since we’ve been talking about full COA NMF schools with medical schools attached, I should mention that UNLV falls into this category. https://www.unlv.edu/finaid/scholarships/president
@FSUdad93 :This thread has a lot of comparison posts between UCF and UF
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-florida/1877259-uf-honors-program-rejection-p4.html
As I suspected, as Burnett HC seems to add a lot more than UF Honors program.
UF > UCF in my mind…
But,
UF Honors ?>? UCF Burnett + BMS… That is the question…
It would be heart-wrenching to let go of BMS, if I choose anywhere else…
Seriously struggling!!!
BTW, I’ve been reading about honors, UF Honors in particular…
If you come to college with a lot of dual enrollment/IB/AP credit, much of the advantage goes away (NA).
After reading that thread, I am much surprised. I thought UF Honors was just a given! Son already has UCF Honors and FSU Honors as well as other non Florida Universities. I guess we wait now.
Dd received her official NMF offer from UTD today by email and portal has been updated if any of you are waiting. Feels so good to see everything officially.
Thanks for the heads-up @Mnacttutor! S hadn’t checked his email for a while but all the NM scholarship items were in his portal. I agree, it’s wonderful to see the official offer!
@Mnacttutor You are so right about it being nice to see it officially!! UCF updated my portal yesterday and it still feels surreal!
Daughter received confirmation in the email from UTD about their offering and galaxy is updated as well. So the extra $3000 added (divided by 8 semesters) is the money to sweeten the pot or is that in lieu of the $2500 that she would have received from NMSC? A little confused. I had not seen that on their list before. Thanks
NMSC hasn’t released thier scholarships yet so she might get more;-)
@iAmACynic, that $3k appears to be the official NM portion of the scholarship package. I’m not sure if that means our students definitely were not selected for a corporate NMSC award or if it’s just a placeholder which would be updated if the student gets the NMSC-sponsored $2500.
@vistajay My son is a Benacquisto at Florida State. After Bright Futures pays its share, they will deposit 7336 each semester into his account. It will pay fees for dorm and dining plan if purchased and any overage goes into his personal bank account. With bright futures, the total award is 21,078.50 annually
thank you @3scoutsmom, @traveler98. So if NMSC sponsored $2500 comes through, then the amount currently on there will be reduced by $500? Kinda generous now than having to accept $500 fewer buckaroos! In all honesty, I have heard good things about the treatment NMFs receive at UTD - even two years out! We will be attending a preview on March 9th. So hopefully everything should start to congeal soon thereafter. We will see.
thanks.
