2018 Stanford Transfer Thread

Thanks very much to both of you. Mjr2013, you definitely answered my question - I appreciate it. sounds like our CC credits were pretty similar, though you had a few more than me. I’d be at almost exactly 60 credits on the semester plan, which, after some quick research, looks like 90 on the quarterly plan. My courses have been intro sciences excluding a biomedical ethics course and freshman comp. Like I said, I’d be thrilled no matter what year I technically enter as, but thanks for helping me think ahead. Thestandard, I’ll definitely keep good track of my old transcripts; thanks for the share and good call. To your point, I’ve been lucky enough to become close with the dept. chairs and deans at my school who told me they would write descriptions of courses in case my transfer school wanted them to evaluate the curriculum of individual courses.

How is the transition from semesters to quarters? That sounds fun and intense. If ya don’t mind me asking!

@thestandard is correct. I believe that you mean syllabi however, not transcripts. It’s evaluated at the department level on a course-by-course basis, when you have the syllabus for the class you hope to transfer.

@Doubleblind It was definitely part of the transition for me, but it’s hard to say how much of my transition was community college to Stanford and how much was semester to quarter. I don’t particularly love or hate the quarter system. It’s great when you want to take cool courses, because two semesters vs. three quarters gives you a little bit more latitude to work with course wise, and keeps you on your toes with change, which I like. It’s awful when you’re sick (like I was week 9, 10, and finals of winter quarter), because you (or at least I) feel like you can’t afford to miss anything, because it moves so quick.

Very cool. I actually have specifically avoided electives because I wanted to sprinkle them in with my more difficult coursework in my final two years of undergrad. Exciting stuff!

Does Stanford even care if we submit our mid-term report?

@littlepuppy503 it certainly does help, but you might be a bit too late

The mid-term report is not required or even mentioned on the transfer page at all.

@choser i contacted admissions and they said that if i wanted to send it in, I could and it would be considered since I’m a freshman applicant

@TheLastofUs9 in your case it makes sense

Hey everyone. My name is Vlad and here is my little profile.

Applied to UCLA, UCB, and Stanford. UCB is my top “realistic” choice, Stanford is my dream school.
Currently attending Santa Monica College (1,5 hour trip each way from where I live). This is my 2nd year here.

4.0 GPA, 69-semester units in.

Economics major here, but I have taken all available math courses (finishing up linear algebra right now) and calc-based physics (mechanics and electricity).
Took at least 6 economics related classes (including macro and micro econ).
Completed IGETC, no “easy” gen ed classes.

23 years old. 4-year gap since the high school (graduated in Ukraine.)
Opened my own dance studio in Ukraine when I was 13 y.o to support my family. Choreographed and competed on “So you think you can dance Ukraine,” “Ukraine’s got talent” (finalist in both tv shows.) Taught dance lessons in orphanages. Represented Ukraine in the World Hip Hop Championship in Las Vegas etc.

Moved to LA on my own as a political refugee when I was 18. Worked 12 hour days, 6 days a week for 3$ /hr at the Thai restaurant (before I got my work permit) for one year.

After a year, I got signed with a top dance/model agency in LA. Worked in the entertainment industry for 2 years for top athletic brands, A-list artists, and shot a few movies (nothing super major, although you can see one of the movies on Netflix lol.)

The week after I obtained my green card I quit dance, got a full-time restaurant job, and started classes at SMC. I always wanted to go to school, although it was hard to walk away from the entertainment industry at that point.

Through this entire time, I have fully supported my family back home. While in school, I’ve been working 30-40 hr/wk.

All of this stuff is in my application + more ( trust me, I’ve been through hell and back multiple times through my short life.) I’ve been completely honest in my essays. All my essays are very personal.

Good luck to everybody!

Hey guys, whats is everyones back up schools?

@Shagunbali I got accepted to University of Rochester and Trinity College, and I’m waiting to hear from Columbia, Yale, Penn, and Duke.

hbu?

That’s awesome! I just got accepted to UCLA, but I’m waiting to hear back from UC Berkeley and Cornell

Accepted to UCLA and UC Davis. Also waiting on Berkeley and Dartmouth.

Obviously Stanford is my number 1, but honestly all the schools I’ve applied to are amazing. I think the fact that we even applied for Stanford means a lot lol. People who aren’t afraid to give it a shot and who go against the odds.

Congrats to you both! @nick1234567892 Stanford is my number 1 too

I think everyone who applied to Stanford as a transfer really have some guts. Says a lot about us! I know a lot of people who thought it would be “pointless” to apply due to the low acceptance rate, but hey, here we all are with that “What if” in us? ;

@Shagunbali Hey. All it takes is one admissions officer to be intrigued by your essays for you to get in (assuming you have reasonable grades of course.) Those people who suggest to not apply are just sour they did not get into their dream school, or jealous that you may have a chance, no matter how minute, to go to a place like Stanford.

P.S ~ I am also very anxious for Stanford decisions to come out. Best of luck to all!

Does anyone know or can predict when Stanford results might come out?

@collegetransfer1029 we will know by May 15th.

Anybody else hear back from other schools yet?

@mjr2013 What was the admission contract when you were accepted? I’m applying with a 4.0 GPA, but I currently have a C in calc and am trying my best to get it up to a B. What grades were you allowed to get?
