2019-2020 USC Transfer

@baohnguyen FYI: once you have completed 30 units (whether in the fall or the spring) they do not factor your SAT or HS gpa into their decision. So if at the end of your spring semester you have more than 30, they only look at your college grades. I had only 15 units when i submitted my application and had 30 at the end of my spring semester. I did receive a notice for my spring grades in late April.

@Tuttwirl Oh I know ahah. Just gonna include them because they may help.

Just finished first semester at a CUNY
First Year, Sophomore standing (with AP credit)

First Choice: Business Admin
Second Choice: Mathematics
GPA: 3.88
SAT score: 1500
Units: 32 credits with AP (47 after Spring semester)
Pre-reqs: taking Accounting 1 in the Spring, taking Accounting 2 over the Summer
GenEd: Finished 5/8 in the Spring, taking the last one in the Spring to have 6/8
Extracurricular: Very active at a school music business club

I’m kind of worried about Marshall being more difficult than some of the other programs. I’m considering applying to Mathematics as my first choice instead, as I’m equally interested in Mathematics. One issue with that would be my lack of Math pre-reqs above Calc I & II.

Should I consider that Marshall might be more difficult to get into? How does everything look?

@GotYa55 Oh okay good.

Hello, I’m turning in my application within the next couple of days but the Common Application is confusing in that it doesn’t have one of the subjects I need to post my grades and I’m not sure if I should attach my transcripts to the documents on the USC portion of the application or if they’re suppose to be sent directly by my school to USC. Any one know what to do?

Just finished 3rd semester at a UCONN
2nd Year

First Choice: Political Science
Second Choice: Sociology
GPA: 3.748
ACT: 31
Units: 46 credit hours completed
Extracurricular: interned for the CT Dems, involved in modelUN conference, part time piano teacher

I’m kinda worried about my gpa and my major as I don’t know how difficult it can be for a polisci major to get in? Also i’m from out of state (ct) and I don’t know if that will impact my chances??? can anyone give me any insight into how my stats look?

While at usc can you take a summer class at a community college?

I have 4.0 GPA from a community college in Illinois. (37 credits)
taking 13 credits this semester.
I have a 1300 SAT score.
Will I get in?

HI, I currently go to UCI as a political science major but my dream is to transfer to USC into their school of cinematic arts. I’m interested in cinema and media studies and writing for screen and television. The problem is that as a polisci major, I don’t have much to show for that department of education. Not to mention that I just recently finished my first quarter and I’m finally adjusting to College life. I ended my first quarter with a 3.2 and I’m worried because it seems far below the average.

What do I need to do to be on track for a major like that? Should I switch out of Political science and into UCI’s film arts school? One reason as to why I want to go to USC is because of how great their media school is, compared to UCI’s. I don’t want to be stuck in the art school here if USC rejects again down the line.

TLDR I want to transfer out of UCI to one of USC’s cinematic arts majors but I am lost and I don’t know how I should go about doing that.

Thank you for your response, I’m very stressed out and I would appreciate all the help.

@CADREAMIN Is getting a D in my transferable math class at my CCC (MATH 118 at USC) a bad thing? That’s the lowest grade I’ve gotten besides a B. I’m going to retake it this spring, and I want to apply to Marshall. Will I get rejected?

I’ve heard they still calculate the D in your grade even if you take the class over and get a higher grade.

@woshua USC doesn’t honor grade forgiveness, so they will calculate both grades. It has the potential to be pretty bad as I’m sure Marshall puts a pretty big emphasis on your grade in math. I wouldn’t be sure what to expect in this scenario.

@zettasyntax I had the opportunity to drop it with a W, and I don’t know why I didn’t. With the D I still have a 3.35 GPA along with 42 transferrable units.

I’m doing 9 units in the winter and possibly 12-15 units in the spring. By the end of spring, I’ll have 8/8 GE completed (or 7/8 if they decide not to count my general biology class) along with my AA and all my Pre Reqs done as well.

The only thing that doesn’t look good is my GPA which will hopefully be at a 3.5 by the end of spring.

@woshua It honestly might have been better if you dropped the course when things weren’t looking good. I for some reason tried to take a math class that was more advanced than necessary for my major. I had already completed a stats course, but I wanted to take pre-calc to show that I could handle a “harder” math course. Things went terribly. I got a D on the first two exams. I just didn’t have the time to dedicate to this class because I was having a bit of a health scare and was in and out of the ER. I know USC isn’t the biggest fan of W’s, but I felt like dropping the class would have been much better than failing. I wound up taking an 8 week class in micro econ to make up for the class I dropped.

TLDR; Hopefully you’re able to bring that GPA up a bit and do better the second time around.

@zettasyntax should I give up and not apply anymore?

When talking about reasons for transferring, should we include anything about our current schools? Or mainly focus on why USC is a good fit for us?

If im from a community college and want to go to Viberti Comp sci and got a 3.7 for the fall, do I have a chance. The problem is that the guideline says Math English GE and Science. I got all of the required classes but only took a science in the Spring 2019(am taking). I took 17 credits in the Fall and will take 15 in the Spring. I expect a 3.9 or higher for the spring. Calc 2 Comp SCi 2 . English, Physics.

how tf do i choose a major. Ive been searching for a while and can’t find it

@woshua I wouldn’t think like that. It never hurts to try - especially if you’ve already done a lot of work on your supplements and whatnot. It might be difficult, but you never know.

@Halofax You can mention your current school/situation, but it’s better to focus on why USC is the right school for you. It wouldn’t be nice to say, bash your current institution with comments like “Oh, the CS department here sucks, it’s too small, etc.” For me, I talked about a certain lab that USC had in my major’s department and how I would love to participate in some research there. I was never a lab assistant or anything, but I did get to be a subject :stuck_out_tongue:

So during this winter, I was taking two courses during intersession. One at another community college (far away from my house) and another at my home CC. I had to drop the one at the CC that was farther away from my house due to some family emergencies. I’m taking Should I incorporate that W I had received in the college coursework of the app?
(Also, I have already registered for that class at my home CC for the spring semester)

@zettasyntax Thanks I will try my best but also cry if I get rejected.
