2-ish days left guys!!!
I’m still trying to decide if i would go or not, so could any of you help out by answering some of these questions?
The schools pretty big in terms of people, so are the facilities usually crowded? Like will the tennis courts and gym always be super packed?
Are the placement exams hard? I don’t want to have to repeat classes I already have.
How often are social events and what kind of social events are common?
How often do people normally leave campus and how easy is it to get to downtown Durham and other places?
How good is the food? (lol im always hungry)
I am a parent, not a student. My kid left 2 years ago—so my information may be dated.
- Take the placement tests. Don’t worry about repeating a class. If you don’t do well on the placement test, you don’t know the subject well enough for NCSSM standards. The school will move you up (or down) the first two weeks of school if the placement is not correct. Since the school is on a trimester system, you take a lot more courses in a year and it evens out. 2. There are intra-school social events. My kid had fun. 3. You can leave campus in daylight with another person. So, in the winter, it’s more difficult to get off campus b/c of the shorter days. You can easily walk to 9th Street. Downtown is farther. The school has shuttles that run the kids to shopping centers and grocery stores (loops) on Friday and Saturday evenings. 4. Food is meh. Get a small refrigerator. Keep extra food in your room. My kid was not sure she wanted to go as well when she got in. But, she went and loved it. It’s the hardest work you’ll ever love. The school is not perfect, and it’s very stressful first trimester—as you get used to not being the best at everything. And, you go home every 3-5 weeks for a long weekend, so you get to maintain your home friendships as well.
- Facilities are not crowded. Like, ever. Kids here don’t do a lot of exercising lol. Combination of laziness and a lot of work to be doing.
- Placement exams are not hard. As long as you know the material, you’ll place into the appropriate class. You can always retake the placement exam at the beginning of the school year.
- Social events hosted by the school aren’t too common, maybe two or three times a trimester. But they’re usually dances or paint wars or stuff. For example we just had Holi today (indian festival of color/love).
- People leave campus All. The. Time. Mostly to go get food at like panera or elmo’s (diner) or chubby’s/ cosmics (mexican). Or to go buy food at Harris Teeter. Or just walk around and explore.
- Food isn’t that great. Especially on the weekends when the grill is closed. You get used to it after a while though, but it’s nice to go off campus every now and then to get something different to eat.
Hope that helps! Good luck tomorrow.
do you guys have any idea if there’s an ice skating group/a rink nearby?
im super super nervous and i really want to get in, is it bad i hope a lot of people get scared away and don’t go? i know that there will be some people to decline but im still anxious.
Are decisions out today or tomorrow?

Everyone join “the real ncssm ncssm class of 2018-2019 page”
guyssss i’m so nervous!!! has the email checking thing worked for anyone yet?
Has it worked for you? @lliiaa
@lliiaa @pineapplepen It doesn’t work yet, but maybe tomorrow morning
agh guys I’m so nervous
I am panicking soooo much that I just grew like ten thousand pimples over night…
I can’t wait
@0100000101100111 Same, ive been doing more and more research on the school and the more i find, the more I want to go. Also all the people that applied at my school have been talking about it all day and its making me more and more nervous
@someguy9 dude same I’ve spent like 2 hours now watching videos and reading blogs
i really hope we all get in, that all of us do, honestly. i mean every single one of us would definitely benefit from this ncssm experience (and deserve it too). i wish the 2nd ncssm campus that’s planned would already exist so more of us can attend it!! ahh
@0100000101100111 I’ve been doing the same thing! I’ve read all of the “journey through Ncssm blog” and probably every story on the website. I’ve also been asking so many questions to the people that got in from my school last year
Hey y’all- I wouldn’t recommend email checking. It’s quite possible that they don’t quite go “last19F.I.@ncssm.edu”, they might use the first two letters of your first name. So bad practices lol. Also, if y’all get in make sure to join the facebook page- “NCSSM Classes of 2018 and 2019” - the biggest one, the rest are fake. Best of luck y’all, you’ll hear in like 22 hours.
