2019 NCSSM Future Applicants

@adiacs CD4 is fairly competitive. However, SAT scores are compared against your high school. Also, admissions is females v. females and males v. males because dorm space. Also, make sure to make whatever you are passionate about apparent in your essays. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the info! @shadowclan98

Do you if NCSSM will be using the new congressional districts for the upcoming year?

Hey guys I am a boy from CD 3 and I go to a private school in Kinston in which usually 1-3 kids get in each year. Here are my classes last year:
Honors Biology
Honors Economics/Government
Honors French 1
Honors English 1
Honors Pre Calculus
Honors Spanish 1
All of my grades were 98-99 range, I didn’t get to be able to do aps because freshmen aren’t allowed to take any aps.
I was one of the first people to take two foreign languages in one year in a while and was the only one to finish with A+ in both classes.
Here are my classes in Sophmore Year
AP World History
AP Calculus AB
Honors English 2
Honors Chemistry
Honors Spanish 2
Honors French 2
Right now, I’m reading AP World because many people end up doing bad in that class.
EC: perfect score on National Latin Exam, top 6 science Olympiad finish, led team as freshman to top 2 place at State Quiz Bowl, founding member of Debate Team, founding member of Poetry Club, was one of only two freshman in years to make Comprehensive (AP Math competition) team, finished first in event. Leader of Ronald McDonald house, An unpaid intern for the North Carolina Coordinated Campaign, youngest fellow in state campaigning for Democrats, has registered over 50 people, Soccer Team 7-9 (co captain), Cross Country Team, Highest Piano Score in Entire Region.

I am completely worried about my SAT’s however, as in my first practice test I went cold and got a 1200/1600. I expected my CR practice score to be around a 580 bc I didn’t study and didn’t know about the test until the day before lol but I omitted some on math which led my score to go down. What would be a good score to get on the SAT and what are my chances?

Thank you.

Oh and I forgot to say that I am a senior adviser and intern for North Carolina House Candidate Brian Farkas

Average score range is 1900-2100. I have known some people who got in with scores closer to 1700-1800. Just do the best you can. If it’s not that high don’t fret because you can make up for it with other parts of your application. Just do the best you can.

Thanks jaejay. This is the new sat out of 1600 so in the range on my first practice test was around a 1750 on the old one. Are my grades in school, Ec’s, and everything else good enough or not really up to par with everything else.

What would be my chances out of 10 lol o sound so cliched but I want to get out of my school full of pretentious kids and I really love ncssm lol

I completely forgot about the new sat! You are a very competitive and well rounded student. I will say that I personally think your stats look great right now! I don’t want to give a chance out of 10 because I am not the admissions people, I do not know the selection process blah blah blah. How competitive is your district?

Thanks man, that’s awesome. Well our district is Greenville and the surrounding areas. A lot of kids from JH ROSE, like around 4-5 will get in. I go to parrott academy, which is known to be good enough to get 1-2 students in, but no one did last year because the class of 2018 is trash lol. It had around a 33% acceptance rate last year. Really I’m focused on keeping the same in everything except the SAT, which should be around a 1400 when i take it, and my essays.

I know a lot of people from parrot (most in class of 2018) & I can’t say that I disagree about the trash last year part ahaha. Just do the best you can and if it’s mean to be, you’ll get in. PM me if you need anything else

Lol yeah I was just kidding they’re really nice and smart I just like calling them trash. What was your sat score? Lol just wondering

1980 I think? But my schools average is around 1200 for the old test. They don’t really care about the actual score they care about your score in comparison to your schools average that year.

@jaejay REALLY? My schools average on the old SAT was like 2050. Thats gonna make things much harder :((

oh thats actually awesome because i scored around a 1820 on the old sat and i mean my schools SAT average is like a 1400 on the old or around a 950ish so I’m about 250 points ahead on my first.

Hi! I am a rising sophomore planning to apply to NCSSM 2019. I have a quick question.

I just want to hear your opinion about this. If you were me what would you do?

My current (Freshman) GPA is 4.3 and I signed up for 2 APs and all honors (except Spanish 2) for my sophomore yr.
I wanted to do more APs but I just don’t have enough space in my schedule. My school doesn’t offer English/Science or History APs to freshman/sophomore. So in order to take 3 APs I need to eliminate one of my electives between Spanish or Band. So I am thinking about quitting band. I was #1 flute in concert band in my school and I am moving up to 2nd advanced band next year which is honor band (but no AP credit). I am thinking about auditioning next year for all district band, but I don’t know if I would make it. I am also playing flute at nursing house as one of my community service activities.

If you were me would you quit band(honor credit) and take one extra AP? or no?

It’s not like I am an amazing flute player who is in all district or state band but I heard that NCSSM wants to see well-rounded applicants; but wouldn’t they throw out my application if my GPA is not good enough compare to other applicants in my district? I am in CD 9 (Charlotte Meck) which is really competitive.

And one more question. haha sorry

is the new SAT essay required or recommended to apply to NCSSM? Do we have to send our essay score along with the actual SAT score?

@ajewodk your application looks pretty good. I have a different GPA scale so what is your average in school. Have you taken the SAT? It looks awesome that you are doing the flute, so try to accentuate that considering I don’t know
many who do that. Are there any other EC’s. I know your district is really hard but since it looks like you have very good grades and a very good EC you should compete. Just make sure your Sat is around a 1400ish and make sure you do other EC’s and you have a good chance.

Chance me? Lol.

@ajewodk lol I’m in your situation about the aps. In all honesty, just take 2 and strive for some awesome EC’s within your area or join a sport or something like that. NCSSM don’t really give extra brownie points to people who do extra AP’s because a lot of times, it can affect their grades. For example, one of my friends from my school who is applying is a very smart girl who got 2nd at our school(our school has 3 including me who applied lol) and she made the mistake of starting to do three AP’s for NCSSM. She took ap physics because she heard that she technically could, but she had only done geometry and was failing that class within the first few weeks of the summer. Now she’s only taking two. If you take three, it will mess up your extra stuff that is just as important.

@iphoneuser23 Thanks for your great advice! And here are the answers to all your questions.

I can’t find my school’s average GPA but average SAT is 1144. And no I have not taken SAT yet. I am planning on taking this October/January. My other ECs: I am in Model UN and Key Club, UNICEF, I volunteer at senior house, 2nd harvest Metrolina food bank, and Habitat restore, and I am also a tech tutor at my local library. I placed 1 first and rest 2nd place in Science Olympiad (regional) in 8th grade (but I couldn’t compete this year because of my other club but I am planning to participate next year), I was in a Freshman council board. I was in JV Basketball team. I am going to be one of the officer in UNICEF next year and I am a Sophomore class president.

Next year I am planning to participate in Science Olympiad and Mu Alpha Theta along with my previous clubs that I just mentioned.

@iphoneuser23 I think your application is just awesome. Particularly your ECs. They are really going to like that. I was really impressed. And are you planning to take SAT again this year?

And do we have to take optional SAT essay? Is it requirement? recommended?
