2019 UT Waitlist is moving

My son just got an email to choose a major from a list and he will be offered admission.

His stats:

ACT 35
SAT 2290 (1510 M/CR, 1530 M/WR)
GPA: 4.6 UW
National Merit Finalist
14 AP (4’s and 5’s)
4 years of foreign language
Just outside the top 10% at a very competitive school
Lots of volunteer work and focused music with many competitive awards

His application essays and EC’s had a pre-med focus with 400+ hours of hospital volunteer work. He made a switch to one of the most competitive engineering majors at the last minute and was wait-listed. UT said they did not consider his second choice when they made their decision which would have been a perfect fit for him (maybe because he was outside the 7%).

All his honors applications have re-appeared.

What major did he apply to initially?

ChemE - class rank matters a lot at UT. Also major related EC’s are important.

My older son is at UT engineering (lower stats) but he was an auto admit and got his major in November the year he applied. He also had a resume filled with major related EC’s.

My younger son currently has University Honors, Engineering Honors, possible leadership seminar to Italy and a large National Merit scholarship from Texas A&M. He also has full to half tuition scholarships from some other schools that offer National Merit packages.

Don’t think scholarships will be available so late from UT.

My son was also on the wait list and got an e-mail this afternoon to choose from a major at 5:00 on Friday for admission, but McCombs (his application choice) was not an available major option. His admissions appeal is still pending, so I don’t know how this affects his appeal. @EventHorizon32, do you see the honors apps in the dashboard? They have not reappeared in my son’s dashboard, maybe because he applied to the BHP and McCombs is not a wait list major option for him. P.S. So hard to believe that your son did not get in originally with those stats!

My son too. Such a relief!

@texasjayhawk his Cockrell and CNS honors applications show on the dashboard. Unless it’s a computer glitch- lol

My son was initially disappointed as UT was a top choice for him especially since his brother goes there. But many from his school with better class ranks than him did not get into biomedE or chemE. They will probably get into an Ivy or Duke/JHU but not UT.

You bring up a good point about appeals and accepting this offer. Does accepting this offer cancel the appeal? We did not appeal.

Oh boy. High Anxiety Part II. My D heard that two girls at a sister school cleared waitlist today. @texasjayhawk and EventHorizon32: Do you know what majors are offered? My D was offered Waitlist, Pace & Cap. She applied for ChemE and McCombs. She appealed two weeks ago to be considered by another college. Thanks!

@WrigleyMom, I don’t know that everyone offered from waitlist has the same list of available majors, but the list of majors my son has from which to choose are all in Liberal Arts, Undergraduate Studies, Education, Communications, Social Work, or Interdisciplinary Studies. He applied to McCombs. He was also offered waitlist, PACE, and CAP. He appealed three weeks ago and the appeal is still in review. He accepted PACE and was interested in it, but hadn’t decided to do it. He loves UT, but I have to wonder if he wouldn’t be better off to be safely in the business school at A&M, rather than hoping for a transfer into McCombs next year!

Does anyone know about the interdisciplinary studies program?

@WrigleyMom‌ where are yall from and what sister school got some off waitlist?

Houston. The sister school is St. Agnes.

Texasjayhawk - have you child go into Liberal Arts, and make sure he takes the McCombs 1st year courses. Then he can transfer into McCombs at the end of spring CY16 if his grades are good enough. If he doesn’t get in he can major in Economics, since they have the same beginning schedule roughly. The courses he needs to take are Calc 1 and Calc 2 (the first two semesters of the 3 semester sequence will work), Micro and Macro Economics, and have 24 or more total credits. The other courses are generic type courses everyone has to take, things like one UGS course, one English course, etc. With his test grades he may place our of the writing course.

Thank you, @texansfan1. Somewhere else I saw someone recommend UGS to McCombs, but you think Liberal Arts is preferable?

I just called Admissions. The lady said there were very few spaces available and any others on the waitlist would not be contacted unless the the outstanding offers are not accepted. She didn’t expect any other movement (even appeals) until the middle of May.

UT Chem E was brutal this year. Son’s GF was accepted early (auto admit) but did not get ChemE. I think she got Mechanical though. We have heard of lots of kids who did not get ChemE with amazing stats.

Same with Computer Science. Crazy!

For anyone that is lurking or finds this useful, this was sent from UT to college counselors yesterday:

Next Steps for UT Austin’s Wait List

The Office of Admissions at UT Austin will begin contacting an initial group of students today (Thursday, March 26) about options for admission from the wait list. Here’s how the process will work:

Selected students will receive an email informing them that a limited number of majors have available space.

Tomorrow (Friday, March 27) Admissions representatives will contact students by phone to give them the opportunity to discuss their options.

Students interested in admission to one of the available majors will be able to log in to MyStatus to select a major (starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27). Students must make a selection no later than 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 30.

After a student makes a selection, the Office of Admissions will follow up with an official offer of admission to the major they've selected.

Because space is limited, we are offering this option to an initial group of about 300 students. If the spaces do not fill by midnight on March 30, we plan to contact additional students with the same offer. Once available spaces are filled, all remaining wait-listed students will be contacted to let them know that the wait list has been closed.

Students who are offered admission after selecting a major will need to satisfy their enrollment deposit by May 1 to officially accept their admission offers.

More about Majors
Most majors in the Moody College of Communication, the College of Education (excluding kinesiology majors), the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Social Work, and the School of Undergraduate Studies are available. In most cases the available majors do not include those the students initially requested when they applied for admission.

The major a student selects will be the major in which he or she will be expected to remain for at least one year. Opportunities for major change are limited, and students will not be able to seek internal transfer until the end of the freshman spring semester. The internal transfer process is competitive and never guaranteed.

Wow , Wrigleymom, super informative. So they will potentially close the wait list prior to the 5/1 deadline.? Crazy !

That is what it says. I cut and pasted it from the HS college counselor email received from UT. However, UT will get cancellations around May 1. Some kids that were accepted may go elsewhere and maybe some will not cancel but not pay tuition. I guess the UT “registered” algorithm is pretty darn good.

I guess my point is that, since his interest is in business, outside of McCombs the Eceonomics degree is the next best thing. You can still do a lot with it especially if you get good grades (grad school, MPA, etc.). Plus the beginning classes are close (the Economics and Calc classes). Economics is in the Liberal Arts College. This way if McCombs doesn’t work out (which would be because his grades aren’t good enough), he is still on his way to an Economics degree. Keep in mind to transfer into McCombs he will need above a 3.6 GPA (the avg is about a 3.8).
