@citymama9 Your daughter not being interested, often has more to do with not being concerned about the label of honors college, and really the timing of the essays couldn’t be worse. My son in Schreyer and this son, knew about the essays and wrote them early. She may be perfect for Schreyer, and may gateway as I mentioned anyway. (No essays but also no scholarship). To go to UP you need to be hardworking and diligent regardless, she will do great! I hope you hear something soon, just like the rest of us!!! (*when I say label, often the kids see it is as nerdy in a way and the extra honors courses and thesis are grueling)
@citymama9 ugh, this is what I hate about the internet - can’t read tone. I certainly understand the college process is not only daunting, but also overwhelming and the kids certainly suffer from “application fatigue” (if there is such a label?) If she is smart enough to be in the ballpark for Schreyer, then I’m sure she would do great!
My experience with Schreyer kids is that many of them were invested - early on - into Schreyer. When questions went live (end of July/early August), the questions were pulled and kids started working on them. Certainly some of these kids would have gone to Penn State anyway, just that SHC is the icing … they are smart, diligent, but wanted to find a way to make it smaller, take advantage of the extra resources that SHC offers, and the scholarship (albeit small compared to many) is helpful for a school that is notoriously stingy with $$$.
Again, not that your kid isn’t many of those things and will be successful, I just see that kids who “want” SHC, know that early and plan for it and it wasn’t an afterthought for many.
I’m probably digging myself deeper here, so I will stop before I ingest more of my foot.
good luck to all!
For those waiting on decisions/stalking the portal (guilty as charged since I found this thread), again, the only thing that was indicated was apply by the 11/1 EA deadline, hear back by 12/24. So worst case just about 3 weeks left to wait. Hang in there everyone!
@lucyvanpelt I agree, when questions went live, my kids started research. I also agree about the $, PSU gives noth much really other than Schreyer, and my son NEEDED the smaller campus environment Schreyer offered. Good luck to you all!!! ps, haven’t seen any acceptances today either…
@dentalum which branch did you get accepted to?
For those counseling parents here to relax and breathe and be patient (good advice but a little frustrating, some of us vent to relax)
Here is a quote from last years decisions 2022 thread, dated March 2018
“I find it curious that when the “Admission Notification by:” date passes without a decision there is absolutely no communication to the applicant of the delay, even when the delay stretches into weeks. It is certainly understandable that there could be a delay for many different reasons, the institution is huge, after all. But no communication at all? Not even a simple statement on the website or the portal? “Curious” is the most positive spin I can put on it.”
So we who are anxiously waiting and keep getting told dec 24 is coming with answer as promised, need to prepare ourselves and our kids
I saw quite a few posts from 2022 of people who had applied in December and even November who didn’t get an answer or any notice by Jan 31 or even into April
Corrrction, applied earlier by or before nov 30
Not applied in dec
@ziveli513 Last year was first for SRAR - that was a learning curve, and they looked hard at their process and implemented EA this year-continuous improvement. When you look at a number of those students who applied by 11-30, some were not sure all materials were received by 11-30…everything had to be in by that date and some admitted that their test scores were delayed. And others changed their major to DUS at last minute-lots of moving pieces on applicants’ end too. A call to admissions from a parent got the word out and they did finally update the portal. EA was implemented to help that situation this year. It’s is a powerfully successful process given yield and output. It is hard to wait, but it will be worth it. Your d’s Stats are terrific!!!
@miltonmom1 ??thanks for the positives
we do love penn state
Alum household here, d has been going to penn state football games all her life
That’s why we are anxious! But I do believe she will get in, eventually ?
I just want us all to be prepared that we may not get our final answer by 12/24
Managing expectations is valuable after all
Cheers to all
@jlhpsu when you mean a 3.6 gpa will almost certainly result in being denied to Smeal, do you mean a 3.6 unweighted or a 3.6 weighted?
@blazinamazin2023 For sure a 3.6W, unweighted would depend on what the weighting scale was and what GPA that translates to.
Can you only gain entry into Schreyer as a freshmen or can you apply after you are already admitted such as after freshmen year? @jlhpsu
@collegegirl2023
You can apply after you are a student as well:
https://www.shc.psu.edu/admissions/apply/current.cfm
@jlhpsu isn’t the unweighted gpa scale standard for most schools?
It’s more standardized than weighted, but no, it’s not standard. Most follow the link below, but there is a sizable minority that do not.
https://pages.collegeboard.org/how-to-convert-gpa-4.0-scale
@blazinamazin2023 UW is the standard and Penn State posts their middle 50% based on a 4.0 scale. There is much debate over whether that’s weighted or unweighted but since it’s out of a 4.0 scale, that is unweighted to me.
But Smeal does not work on the middle 50%. The middle 50% is the average for all majors entering Penn State. Smeal is the hardest college to get into. It’s acceotance rate for Freshman admissions is somewhere around 11%. The GPA requirement for Smeal is high. A 3.6 would likely not make the cut without extenuating circumstances
Why oh why isn’t info like this insight into smeal minimum freshmen qualifying gpa, info like 11% of freshmen get into smeal etc on psu admissions website?
Eligibility for declaring a major going into junior year is published
How is the average prospective student supposed to learn all these hidden gems of info
One would hope all on psu website
@collegegirl2023 You can gateway, no scholarship
@jlhpsu Thanks for the information. Would you email or call the admissions department to change your major, or do you ask to change schools (ex: change from Smeal to another school).
All of the most recent discussion today should be in another separate forum. Isn’t this a decisions forum? I’m getting notification after notification about recent comments and none of them are related to decisions.
