Will I get a national merit commended student for a 206 in NJ on the PSATs?

Probably

Good job

yes you will. im pretty sure.

what do you get for being commended?

they get the satisfaction of knowing they scored within the top 55000 in the country and get to name 2 colleges who they would like the college board to send a nice "this student is academically capable...etc." letter to.

pffffth. i missed semifinalist by 1 point in ny. commended means squat to tell you the truth. if you apply to top schools, you'll be competing against every other commended student out there. you dont get any scholarship (even semifinalist has scholarships), you barely get recognition (just a letter) and it only adds one line to your awards/academic recognition list. dont count on being commended to get you into the college of your choice.

What's the commendation cutoff for Maryland?

is 201 good enough for commended in ny? stupid ny...., all the smart ppl, lol.

When do you know if your score is high enough for semi-finalist or commended? My son has a 218, not much of an improvement over his sophomore year's 212 :( I can stop looking at Ivies now, I guess.

BurnThis, it depends what else your son has. 218 is a very good score, and you shouldn't dismiss a good school based on PSAT scores. many people i know do much better on the SAT anyway. i think you should stay optimistic.

oh yeah he will be definately commended. My friend was a junior last year, he got 217 on the PSATs and his year the semi-finalist cutoff was 218. maybe its similar this year

are you serious? whats 218? 98%? you do realize that ivies dont look at psat scores. theyre PRACTICE. you shoujld have your son find his mistakes and improve on them. 218 is very good btw and assuming he has a high gpa and good ecs he will be a fine candidate for the ivies

Andrassy,
Thanks for the calming influence. As I checked his scores over last year, I realized he'd gone up 6 points in CR and 6 in Math, but his 77 in Writing from last year dropped to a 71 (because he missed ONE more question). According to the sheet, it's still 99th percentile, but the CC world is so imposing that I thought without at 230+ he's sunk. I'll try to remember to look at the bigger picture. Thanks!!

Commended is nationwide. Semifinalist is done by states.

202 to a 201 are always the cutoffs

Overall, the PSAT means absolutely nothing unless you go to a state school. The Ivys will look at your SAT and ACT, not your PSAT. Don't worry about it. Once your over the 2100-2200 range, nothing matters.

BurnThis, I went from a 211 on the PSAT to a 2260 on the SAT. I'm sure your son will do fine. Go look at some of the ED threads from the ivys. Once you get past all 700s and the 2100 range, tests dont matter.

i was wondering if 203 is good enough for commended in ny?

Commended last year was 202 and it is nationwide. Only the NMSF cutoff varies by state.

How incredibly irritating is it that my school still didn't have PSAT scores in today, and I'm on vacation this week so I'll definitely have to wait til January?

screams

then remembers that the PSAT doesn't matter unless I can get some money

lavendar:

I find it hard to believe that your school does not have the scores. The CB sends them out by courier. Your GC maybe stalling. Call CB and ask. Last year, they were sent by DHL to each school on Dec. 8

They wouldn't lie to me...she said they weren't in yet when I asked, and that was the 15th. But I skipped school this week, so I have to wait til Jan. 3.

Whats the cutoff for MISSISSIPPI??
