214 in NY, chances at being a semifinalist?

I was in the 99th state percentile, so I am definitely getting commended. However, last years cutoff was 218 and they rarely decrease by more than 3 points... I'm getting the terrible premonition that my score will be 1 point below the cutoff. Do you think I still might get it?

It’s impossible to predict, but the New York Cutoff INCREASED last year, from 216 to 218.

It is possible that it will drop down again, but I don’t think it’ll drop by more than 2. New York has only had a change of 3 once in the past 5 or so years. All other changes have been less.

However, don’t sweat it. National Merit Finalist only really matters if you want to attend a school that gives out large aid to finalists, but most schools don’t award more than $3,000.

Just don’t worry about it. There’s nothing you can do.

alright thanks. out of curiosity, has there ever even been an occurrence of the cutoff dropping by more than 3 points?

I doubt it. The score cutoff rarely changes very much from year to year, and NY has seen cutoff score of 219 before. but good luck, hope you make it!

alright, thanks
