230 PSAT- does it matter?

I'm a ks junior with ok gpa, top 10%, good ecs, and just scored 230 on PSAT. I don't get my SAT scores back til the end of next week. Could this be finalist? How likely is it that I'm going to get some $ for this? There seems to be a lot of descrepancy over how much good this is going to do me...trust me, I'll need all the help I can get :)

230 is a great score and you are sure to make NMSF and most likely NMF. Many schools will offer you great NM scholarship if you designate them as your first choice school. You still have time and do some research here at CC. You will find out soon how great your 230 is.

230 is guarantee NMF.
Congratulations!

I'm a national merit winner of 2500 with a 222. Once you get past your state's cutoff it doesn't matter too much.

Yeah. You're basically assuredly a NMF as long as you're a citizen, so congratulations!

Schools tend to say that the PSAT is not important, and for most students, it isn't, but if you can get Finalist status, it really is a big deal. You can get lots of scholarship opportunities for being a Finalist, ranging from a one time sum of $2500 to a full ride scholarship at some schools. Even if you don't get a scholarship, it looks pretty prestigious on scholarship and college applications, too. Overall, it's a good thing to have.

congrats toomany, a 230 PSAT in ks is sure-fire NMF. Get ready for a barrage of mail from colleges (if you haven't already), offering you all sorts of great merit aid. Some of them from state schools in states around you.

Congrats! My d got a 230 and a 2290 on the SAT. She was a NMF - but chose to go to a non-NM school (full ride apart from NM), so essentially it amounted to zilch for her - but who knows, maybe it contributed to their opinion in awarding the scholarships she did receive. There are some amazing offers out there for a NMF who lists "amazing offer school" as her first choice! (see other threads here) - most memorable for me is probably University of Texas at Dallas (full ride + $5000)! D got a lot of letters from Florida, Arizona, and Oklahoma with pretty amazing offers for NMF. Ohio State offered full tuition (only).

Yes, it is good enough. My D has 235 and she is a National Merit Winner.

Not only is it guaranteed NMF, it's my pleasure to award you your first scholarship - for $82,500, guaranteed:
Non-Resident National Merit Financial Package 2007

Automatic half tuition at University of Southern California. Full ride at Arizona and Arizona State. Nice to put on application. You will read here that it doesn't impress top schools, but once out of the top 15 or so, I think it helps with admission, if not money. Search the threads. Congratulations!

Baylor University gives you full tuition and some extra money.

Thats a great score! Nice job. You'll no doubt make NMSF. My son was offered full tuition at several schools with stipend $ for computers. You can google for this info. Congratulations, now just do well on the SAT to qualify for NM, there's another chance for more $.
