you have to realize that tier 1 schools aren’t for everyone. not everyone’s meant for a school like exeter, so if you don’t think you’re a great fit academically or don’t think you’re competitive enough, there are tons of other great schools out there, they just don’t get as much “hype”. do your own research, make up your own list, find out where you fit.

there’s nothing wrong with these BSes, it’s just that they’re obviously not for anyone. “pick a few BS from the above list”, and “best boarding schools”, come off as a bit… outlandish, imho.
PS: you spelled canterbury wrong. and i still can’t figure out how it managed to sneak onto that list…

agreed with divealive, there are many more schools other than the 25 listed here that are possibly great fits for students, I think it should be up to the family and the student to decide what schools they want to apply. it’s subjective. I don’t know about “don’t fall in love with any school”, but ,by all means, DO show your passion to your top choice (choices), i promise you the schools can sense that.

What I am trying to say is you are likley not to go wrong by selecting from this list. I do agree there are other schools too.

Also I want to caution, selecting a wrong boarding school may lead to mishapps too. Sometime it is wiser to continue at a good exisitng public school then getting admitted to ANY BS.

Selecting and getting accepeted to the right BS is the key.

I agree with Hopeful, I think NMH would have stronger academics and extracurriculars that Miss Porter’s. I don’t know about Kent. (Or most of the schools off that list, to be honest.)

I know several students who went to Hill- full of traditions, great group of students, beautiful campus. Have gotten kids into fantastic schools.

really ask around on the site the general consensus is the middlesex is significantly better than taft. and is in the GLAD CHEMMS while taft is not ill post something in applicants of 2010 thread to see who thinks which school is better

its not really an opinion, its more of a fact, Taft’s acceptace rates tougher than some other top schools, and it is without a doubt one of the best

“Taft’s acceptance rate is low due in significant part to the fact that day students are accepted. Yield is much higher for day students than for boarders”

At the risk of sounding like, well, a broken record/nagging mother…

The school that’s best is the school that’s best for you. You will achieve best where you fit best. Stop making lists and start exploring websites.

I would have to disagree with that. It really is all about fit and where you fit in. My daughter toured Middlesex and decided not to apply because she didn’t see herself there. She got in Lawrenceville and after revisit said the same thing. All these schools are great. We preferred Taft over the others. It is all about fit.

are you disagreeing with the fact that about the acceptance rates becuase that is the truth

i completely agree with the choosing schools due to fit and gut feeling

there is a saying “love the school that loves you”

to me taft ( i toured did not apply) was too much about athletics and i just got a meh feeling not to say that it isn’t a good school as it ultimately comes down to whatever floats your boat and taft floats your daughter

I don’t think there is that much of a difference if any. Maybe a percent or two. Big deal. When a school forms a class it is about the class as a hole not just taking every kid with a 99% SSAT. If they are low on dancers they will take more dancers one year. If they need tennis players they will take more tennis players. Taft had over 1500 applications for 160 spots this year. Yes athletics are big at Taft. If you are not sporty then I could see it not being a fit for you.

actually the thing is that i am very sporty and actually that is the only way i got into MX as a junior (2 spots for 70 apps) i am a recruited soccer player that has received national, and regional and state honors in addition to playing on a very successful club team. but if i wanted to play sports all the time in would go to IMG or Shattuck St. Mary’s. to me a prep school that puts too much money and emphasis on sports is never a good thing
