25, Broke & Unemployed

I haven't worked in over 5 years and I'm currently living at home. My parents do not claim me on their taxes, I do not file any taxes since I have no income and I receive food stamps. If I file for financial aid, how am I suppose to prove that I have no income?

You will be asked how you support yourself. They know you can’t live on food stamps alone.

I live with my parents. They already pay the mortgage, electricity, etc. The only thing I buy is food for myself with my food stamps. I do not have any bills. They are not providing me with anything besides the room I sleep in. When I do get cash, it’s from friends and I never have more than $100 for the year which I use to buy feminine products. Currently in my savings I have maybe 3 bucks.

Your situation is not unusual. If you are asked for information, you will simply fill out the school’s form intended for students who do not file tax returns. You will be asked for information that you will complete honestly. You should be eligible for a Pell grant and loans, as long as you do not have significant assets (which I doubt, if you haven’t been working).

I’m wondering why your parents don’t claim you as a dependent since it sounds as if they’re entitled to. Btw, this would not make you a dependent student for financial aid if you’re 24.
