How Safe Is Your College? - Page 1 - The Daily Beast

interesting how yale and harvard and tufts are there and not penn which everyone on these boards bring up repeatedly as unsafe and in a bad area…

Interesting indeed. I’ve run the statistics myself, and it makes little sense. It’s even more surprising that Columbia didn’t make the list.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063048037-post43.html

In most cases its not crime on campus, but crime off campus in nearby locales…and often late at night, people drinking and wandering off and getting mugged or raped. Common sense tells you NOT to do that…go drinking and wandering around late at night. And its not just big cities, it happens everywhere. Sometimes in off campus apartments. Kids that age think they are indestructible and immune from that sort of thing. Then it happens. Innocence lost.

Some places you might expect, like Columbia, are actually fairly safe most of the time. But everyone knows NOT to go wandering around anywhere in NYC at night alone, or very late at night even in small groups. The only real deterrent is large groups, and stay in well lit areas.

All colleges report their stats to the government and must make them available to the general public. Most do so deep in their websites, but others you have to go to the government website to see it.

Frequent complaints are date rapes, where drinking was involved and a dispute over whether the sex was consensual or not. Moral to that story is DONT go drinking and then hanging out with someone alone, like in your room or his. Bad move.

Also, 4 schools in Boston, one in Providence and one in New Haven made the list. But none in New York. Interesting.

NYC has really cracked down on crime in the past decade. When I was there years ago, I felt safe in the city at night. It doesn’t surprise me that Columbia did not make the list. Now, Penn should have definitely been on the list.

2 Saint Xavier?

Really? Saint Xavier is in Oak Lawn, a pretty nice suburb of Chicago. There is hardly crime there.

12 IIT

IIT is in a gentrified neighborhood. Bridgeport is hardly dangerous compared to other areas of Chicago.

What is this list based on?

I wonder if applications to Yale, Harvard and Brown will drop based on this? Not!

I’m pretty surprised USC and Johns Hopkins didn’t make the list.

Emerson has reported several statements which deeply criticize the report’s methodology and most people think this list was done very poorly.

agreed…I noticed not only who was on it, but who wasnt…and then looked at the list of 25 safest schools and it was bizarre as well.

Bottom line, look at the stats of the schools themselves. Check first for on campus issues, as that is the best measure of safety. Then the surrounding areas and examine when they occur, at night etc.

You have to be careful no matter where you are. Dont make stupid decisions, particularly girls at night. Drinking (or drugs) put you in grave risk.

lol, crime in Boston!?

I thought NYU, Fordham (located in the infamous Bronx), UCLA (located near the deadly South Central area of Los Angeles), and University of Miami would be the runners for the number 1 spot.

What about USC (southern cal), a friend of mines got shot by some crazy Korean gang member near that area.

Protagonist: NYU’s in one of the wealthiest areas of one of the nation’s wealthiest counties (Manhattan). Additionally, security here is very tight. That’s why it’s not on the list. NYC’s pretty safe. At least in Manhattan. Columbia’s not even on the list, and they’re right near the most dangerous area of Manhattan.

“UCLA (located near the deadly South Central area of Los Angeles)”

You obviously are clueless about L.A. I suggest you comment on areas you are familiar with.

^^ Seriously, UCLA is located in West LA, one of the safest and most vibrant areas in the city.

My friend was pistol whipped on Commonwealth Ave.

To whoever said IIT is in a gentrified area, you’d probably find Gary quite upscale. Are you serious? Armed guards in every building does not give the impression of a safe neighborhood, and Bronzeville is actually one of the roughest areas of Chicago. I’m not sure how safe I’d find IIT in daylight, much less if I had to live there.

I live in Cambridge…

I didn’t know that my area around MIT was dangerous. The last place I would have thought was dangerous (in the world) would be Harvard yard. lol.

Columbia has more sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, and burglaries than Penn.
