Hey, guys. I’m 24 and starting CC this fall. I’d like to transfer to MSU after two years but I’m still open to other colleges.
How difficult is to find people in their mid-20s in Lansing? I’ve heard MI is losing young people, so I don’t want to be in that age group where everyone is either an older native or younger student. I will be a junior, so most of my classmates will probably be around 21 or 22 years old. At 26, I suppose that isn’t too massive of an age gap, but I would still like some friends my age.
Well, I wouldn’t date a 26 year old junior when I was a 17 year old freshman, but that was for other reasons than his age. It’s more common than you’d think to have college students, especially internationals where their home country requires military service, to be your age as a junior.
Others can speak about Lansing in particular, but I would have to warn you that if you are in college at 26, there will be a lot of people who are starting their careers by then or never went to college. I’d not worry about the age gap, and make friends with juniors and seniors, even if there is a few years difference.
Yeah it shouldn’t be a problem if you can find a group of juniors and seniors to hang out with. I know a guy who’s a 25 year old senior and he has a lot of friends. A large percentage of the 21+ crowd go to the bars in East Lansing on a regular basis.
This shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your goals, even if you have few friends. I knew several people who pursued their academic goals ‘out of sync’ compared to others their age. They fit in fine, but mainly because they weren’t trying to find friends to hang with either, and these folks were older than you.
It’s okay if you are older. Remember, a lot of MSU students are in grad school, and they range in age quite a bit. Some people go to school after military service. My advice is don’t try to act like you did at 21. Be yourself. You’ll find a wide range of people to meet.
You are correct there is an age gap from the majority. However, nobody cares about your age just relax. You will definitely find people your age and much older.
If you want to stay in university housing, you could stay in Owen Hall. It is the dorm for grad students and select undergrads. You could meet people your age there (but they would be graduate students, most likely).
