I took my very first ACT test, without studying or knowing what the type of questions were on it, in February and got my results on Monday. I received a 28 composite score. My specific scores were 29 English, 26 Math, 32 Reading, 25 Science, and 6 Essay.
My question is whether or not this is a good score that will get me into a good college. Should I take the test again? Will this score get me some scholarships/money?
Thank you for your help.

It depends on what you consider “good”. It’s certainly good enough for most state universities and many private universities, but not not good enough to be competitive at more selective schools like the Ivies, for example.

Since this was your first time taking it (without any prep), I would definitely do some studying. You should be able to increase your score to a 32 at least, if you put in the work! I would also take it again because of your essay score. It’s quite easy to get an 8, and that’s the score you probably want when trying to get into better colleges.

Increasing your score to 30+ should open up a lot of scholarship opportunities. My friend got $11K/yr at a private university simply for having a 32 on her ACT! That’s definitely worth a bit of studying and another $50 to take the test, in my opinion.

Best of luck! Congrats on a good first score!

The second time you will do better plus studying can always help. RETAKE!!!

A 28 going in blind is very good and will get you into many places. Practice a lot and find out what your weak spots are. Retaking definitely won’t hurt you. :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone! This was very helpful. I will certainly take the test again, and this time I will study before I take. With any luck, I’ll score in the 30’s. Again, thank you all for this wealth of information.

Why on earth would one do that?

I wanted to see how I did with just my knowledge and reasoning skills. I admit, it probably wasn’t the best course of action, but I just wanted to find out where I stood.

I understand that. I just don’t understand what benefit there is in knowing the answer.
