Ive been sober for 8mos now and am finally getting my life back together .Started drinking when i was 15 . Drank everyday til 8mos ago. Ive got my student loans out of default, credit hist. all cleaned up ,working full time til aug. Im a little worried about starting out at a big school like univ. of missouri-columbia. Should i just throw myself into activities > bookwork etc.?
Im planning on staying in a dorm so ill keep busy. Not sure if anyone reading this has any advice ? I could use it .

I'm a recovering addict, similar story-I started school a few years late. Honestly, just go to AA meetings in your spare time and do homework. Don't try to make friends w/18 year old kids that probably are looking to get drunk. Find other "mature" students, form study groups, go to the library, etc. Other than that, work out and go to meetings.

It's great that you became sober - congratulations! And on going back to school too.
There are lots of older students these days, so you won't be the only one by far. One of my professors has a daughter who attended "Mizzou".
The advice wutangfinancial gave seems good. Perhaps ease into things, focusing mostly on your studies and going to AA meetings at first, and maybe after a while, if you feel that you have the time and desire, perhaps join some sort of club or organization - schools tend to have many different ones - depending on what your interests are.

I live with a 36 year old former drug addict in the dorms (suite), and i am very happy with the situation. you can get involved in everything on campus anyone else does. i know several 30 year olds on campus friends with people my age, doing the same stuff dorm govt etc.

Thx for the advice.Im def. gonna work out alot. also. Not sure about the a/a thing. Seems like most people substitute a/a for their addiction. Im gonna stick with taking my antabuse.

Congrats! I'm still in high school(so I can't really give you much advice on the subject), but I know that a LOT of ppl take some years off, or go to jr/community college b4 they go on to a university, so don't worry you shouldn't be the only one. Enjoy going back to school!

Thank you.

I don't know if living in the dorms is a great idea and unless they are upper division dorms. If you are surrounded by freshmen, there is going to be lots of partying and drinking going on. If you are religious, get involved. Join clubs so you can meet people with similar interests (an outdoors club?) About 95 % of college students drink, so it's going to be difficult to avoid.
