Sooo I'm a sophmore at UC Berkeley with a 2.5 GPA.
Basically I got C's in 61A, and 61B (first year)
C- in Math 1B and EE42 (first year)
C+ in 61c (just came out-2nd year)
math 54 hasn't come out yet
and a couple Bs and B+s in english R1a and r1b and other stuff

Questions:

Do i have a chance in getting into L&S CS at berkeley?

Or do I have to change my path/majors?

Is there even a major that accepts students under GPA 3.0s????

Also, should I transfer? When I applied for college a year ago I also got into UIUC and U of Virginia. I even got into HONORS CS at UIUC lol :( why was i sooo lazy

As you know, it will probably take a 3.0 now to get into CS since it is an impacted major. But I believe there are a number of other majors for those interested in CS including applied math and cognitive science. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to transfer at this point. Just focus on the future and work hard for your remaining time at Cal. Good luck!

bro i got C’s or C+'s in all these classes and i had a 2.1 gpa. BUT – i beat the cap and declared this semester. bro why don’t u do the same? ur gpa isnt gonna get better so if u dont beat the cap just give up on it

the cap was designed to weed out people like u and me but the difference is: i loaded up on all the remaining classes (4) so i could beat the cap…

it was a $hitty semester and i could have done better if i spaced them out - but it was urgent. u should have done the same bro and now its too late lol

@georgeat

wait the cap starts next semester or fall 2014?

Maybe you can minor in CS and major in Math? This combo should be able to get you software engineering jobs provided you do well on the interviews.

I don’t know much about transferring to those universities, but try it out if you really want to major in CS.

Georgeat is right. You are best advised trying to beating the cap getting into CS.

If you fail, you can consider Integrative Biology. It has many of the same pre-reqs as CS and requires only a 2.0, but your career prospects with a 2.5 in that major aren’t even close to your prospects of scraping by with a 2.0 in CS.

Applied math was a common alternate major for those who did not get into CS when it was previously capped. But if you got a C- in Math 1B, you may have a rough time in upper division math courses like Math 104. Also, the applied or pure math major requires at least at C average in Math 1A and 1B, and minimum of C grades in Math 53, 54, and 55, and the department only recommends the major for those who got B- or higher grades in the latter three courses.

Posting from Princeton’s site regarding their purported grade deflation:

“I honestly don’t understand what the big deal about grade deflation is. All it really means is that at most, 35% of students in a DEPARTMENT can get A’s. For most classes, this 35% limit has no negative effect whatsoever. It is just something professors should aim for when INFLATING grades. Take General Chemistry for example: say the average grade for a test was a 70%. The professor then INFLATES grades so that ~35% of students get A’s, which means 70%[sic] will probably end up being a B-.”
