3.0 GPA, desiring psych phd or psyd?

As I mentioned in another thread, my boyfriend is looking to apply to a psych program next year sometime as he wants to become a therapist. The problem is, he is likely only going to graduate with a around a 3.0. He was a psych major freshman and sophomore year, did really well and loved it, but he was young and impressionable and his mother bullied him into hard sciences, in which he has about a straight C average-- so he now he has grown the balls to stand up to her and is going back.. sans good gpa, unfortunately. Does he still have a chance? Where should he look? He attends a second or third tier state school at present with a funded program that looked great, but they only accept 8 students so I suspect his chances are slim.

He hasn't taken a practice GRE yet to add that stat in. He is smart but not the worlds greatest reader, so I would expect a low average to mid average score to be realistic at this point.

Can he still pull this off? What are his options?
