3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2011 HS Graduation)

CIA, you have a good list. If you need to drop one, perhaps American, which you label a super reach.

The faculty member from Roosevelt contacted me back. He told me that while the political science department is small (less than 10) and my course offerings may be limited, they are engaged in research and class sizes remain small.

He also invited me to give him a call to discuss his department in detail!

hi! I know that this is a parent’s thread, but I had a question about my chance of admissions. (my parents never went to college, I’m a first generation and chinese if that helps)

attending school at Forest Hills HS in NYC. I’m an average student, SAT score was a 1700 (1080 CR+M). My GPA is probably somewhere around a (I’m not sure, transcripts weren’t available for juniors) 2.9-3.0 (3.1-3.2 weighted). I’ll have some time to bring the grades up, but I’m pretty sure they’ll still be in the B range. I do a lot of volunteering and I am active in two clubs at school. I also have two internships and a part-time job in the upcoming school year (my senior year). I’ve also worked in my junior year and recommendation letters shouldn’t be a problem for me.

Other info:
I went through depression after moving back to NYC from a school on Long Island. I moved out to LI for my freshman year. The depression hit me the hardest this past school year (my junior year), hence the grades plummeted. Would it be okay to use that as my essay topic?

My reach/target schools:
EOP is for students whose families have low income

Ohio University (not OSU!)
Stony Brook University (SUNY, Applying EOP)
UNH (New Hampshire)
SUNY Plattsburgh (Applying EOP)
SUNY Binghamton (Applying EOP)
Brooklyn College (CUNY)

Safeties:

City College (CUNY)
John Jay College (CUNY)
College of Staten Island (CUNY)

(CUNYs are all under one app, six schools per app. for one fee, for anyone who was wondering why I would apply to so many schools)

Thank you!

NZHang, I think you have a good list and I wish you well. I think your prospoed essay sounds honest and candid, which will help.

You might wish to look at additional SUNY options, depending how close to home you wish to stay.

Also, look into a program called Questbridge, which I believe helps low income students.

My son (HS class of 2011) has an UW GPA of 2.9 and weighted 3.4. I need some help with some questions and you all seem helpful. Is this the right spot for me to post college search questions?

Absolutely - fire away!

@Yabeyabe2-- “Also, look into a program called Questbridge, which I believe helps low income students.”

Thanks, but I’m afraid that I don’t have the grades for the Questbridge match program.

What do you think?

8 hours until the Common App is released!!!

mompossible, welcome! You can ask questions here.

How exciting CIA!

omg. the approx. 7 hour wait for the release of the common app just started making me stress over the whole process.

Cunys are good schools, nzhang, so don’t stress! Any other options will be icing on your cake!

It’s probably going to feel a bit underwhelming for me since I have most of the application done. At least I’ll officially have parts of it done.

NZ, sorry, I do not know the grade requirement for Questbridge

Ok here is my son’s search question: (ACT 30/UW GPA 2.9/W GPA 3.4)
schools that have a good international relations program
size between 3k and 20k
not too rural, with good school spirit, and a football team (any division)
not too cold or snowy.
Currently considering: Seton Hall, Ohio University, Arizona State, West Virginia University, Elon (reach), University of Dayton, plus our state school.

Feedback pls on these choices and other ideas.
Thanks.

We visited Ohio U about two weeks ago. It is truly a college town, with small shops/dining around the campus. The tour was in the pouring down rain, I felt so sorry for our tour guide, as I know she wasn’t able to answer a lot of the questions. It seems like a vey welcoming university. There business program seems very strong, and requires seperate test scores/gpa. You should check the website for the additional requirements. They did mention it has four seasons and doesn’t tend to get as much snow as other regions. They have an admissions chat that you and join to get any and all questions answered. My daughter went on line during the chat and got any and all questions answered, there are current students, as well as admissions counselors on line during the chat. Go to their admissions website and see when the next chat is scheduled for prospective students. It is now at the top of my daughter’s list…Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the feedback. The chat option is good information that I did not know. Very helpful.

As expected, the Common App was a bit underwhelming. I already have it done. :(

Mompossible–welcome! Seton Hall is a good school but does not have football, although basketball is popular. A similar school, with more school spirit, a higher graduation rate and a nicer campus, is St Josephs on the border of Philadelphia.

You might also consider Pitt (harder to get into than WVA, but less hard than Elon); Towson and Duquesne (not sure if it has have football). Other than rural location, James Madison and Va Tech seem like a good fit.

Mompossible, also Rutgers, URI and possibly UMass (weather permitting).

The info you provided was great! I’m in NYC so I can’t travel to visit OU even if I’m free. Thank you for posting about it!

OU’s one of my top choices.
