Hey EmmyBet and holliesue- If I have a vote D may go to New Paltz too-if she gets in. They all can wave to Marist together.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Yes, the new building for CS/IT at Marist (Hancock Center) is amazing! Congrats on the acceptance BTW (saw it on the other thread.)

What do you all think of Poughkeepsie and the area that Marist is in? We really didn’t look around the area too much.

My d went to camp or worked at a camp for 10 years south of poughkeepsie, but honestly the only place we ever went to when I visited her was the mall!

kinderny-NP is probably my Ds favorite of the SUNY schools she got into, but I doubt she will end up there. There are two privates that are her favorites. Kind of stings. She got into 3 SUNY colleges. She just got notified by Oneonta that she got the presidential scholarship worth 4k a year, which at a SUNY brings costs down alot. Asked her to consider it and she said she only feels “okay” about the school…sigh…

I hear you. My daughter’s current favorites are Siena (she is in) and RPI (no letter yet but not real likely). Too bad.

We’ll tell you how we feel about New Paltz at the end of the month. We are going there for an audition and will explore the school and the town in detail. We did drive through it two summers ago, and D liked the area and the campus a lot.

holliesue - she’d just spent 2 weeks at camp at Oneonta and after visiting both in the same week I’m with your D on preferring New Paltz. We drove around Poughkeepsie as well, so she could take a look at (dream school) Vassar. Poughkeepsie isn’t glamorous, or even really charming, but it’s civilization! And there’s that oh-so-tempting train to NYC, too.

I definitely see the attraction of NP… and that train to NYC!! Also Oneonta is in our same area code, so that is another reason to prefer NP!

EmmyBet…just wanted to chime in in case you didn’t hear the news. UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow is one of the 4 finalists to become the new President of SUNY New Paltz. If your daughter attends NP she’d have Wisconsin in common with him. Small world isn’t it?

That is so funny! Well, my mother says there are only 300 people in the world, after all.

Hi, I’m new to CC and new to this thread but appreciate the apparent camaraderie here. Would love this group’s advice. My daughter fits this profile and has been accepted to Fordham and Marist. We got to visit both schools and I see that in the Fiske Guide Fordham is listed but Marist is not. In your opinion, is Marist regarded in the same league as Fordham in terms of academics?

AlohaTM, I don’t really know how Marist compares to Fordham, although both are popular choices around her (North NJ.)
As for Poughkeepsie, we have not looked around. My S was so enamored with the computer science program he was sold!

Thank you picktails. Interesting to know they are both popular in your area. Congratulations to your S for getting into his first choice! Marist’s facilities are definitely first class. The area seemed very nice too compared to the location of some other colleges.

AlohaTM – Fordham is perceived in this area (mid/upper Hudson Valley) as a step up academically from Marist. Forham is in the second tier of Jesuit universities, below Georgetown and Boston College, but above such very good schools as Fairfield and Loyola of Maryland. Many top students in our local high schools who are applying to NYU, BC and Georgetown also apply to Fordham as a “match” school. For these kids Marist is usually considered a safety.

Poughkeepsie itself is certainly frayed around the edges, and there are definitely some neighborhoods you don’t want to walk around at night either alone or with other students. Marist, however, is pretty well removed from these neighborhoods; its location along Route 9 is on the northern edge of the city, a mile or so from Hyde Park. The train station, which I use often to go to NYC, can attract some strange visitors late at night, but the station area is well lit, regularly patrolled and should be perfectly safe particularly if students are travelling together.

Thank you hudsonvalley51 for the great information! That was exactly what I was looking for. Not that it automatically means D will end up at Fordham. Lots of other factors to consider… especially the financial aid package. I read in different forums that Fordham is not as generous with their financial aid.

D got a couple more acceptances this week: EA to Goucher, with a nice merit scholarship, and an academic acceptance to Montclair State in NJ. She does have an overall GPA higher than 3.3, but if you take out academics, she comes down to 3.2 (3.3 after last semester, but Goucher didn’t get those grades). I think is that is what Goucher is looking for, since when they list their accepted stats, they say “academic classes.” She has a pretty high test score, but they are test optional. Anyway, she’s always really liked Goucher, from meeting a CTCL rep and also from reading their website; if it becomes a major player in April, we’ll try to get her there for a visit.

Montclair was nice to hear, too, and she did get some merit aid from them. She still has to jump through their audition hoop, so this is only a step.

I’m telling all this in detail for the younger students’ parents who follow this thread and benefit - as I did - from hearing how this year’s 3.X seniors are doing with acceptances.

congrats EB on Goucher and Montclair!

EmmyBet, very nice! Congratulations to you and your daughter!

This thread has really been helpful for me as a student looking for what schools to apply for. But because I know that everycase is unique I’d really appreciate if some of you could look at my situation and tell me what you think…Thanks!

Thank you. Funny thing - today we were remarking that she has 5 acceptances now (2 pending auditions), and she STILL forgets that she was accepted to New Paltz back in December! She was so busy with performances that week that it just never penetrated the gray matter, even though it was she who opened the envelope and read me the letter. We both cracked up! I guess that is the HS kid’s version of a “senior moment.”

Interesting about Montclair: I read through the acceptance materials, and they say now that they guarantee housing. This is a huge change - when we started looking at this school a year and a half ago, we were very concerned about its “commuter school” status, which was quite founded on reality. There are posts on CC about how kids couldn’t get dorm rooms and had some major crises with housing. Well, they’ve really turned that around if they now can guarantee it to anyone who wants! That will make a big difference for on-campus life, too. We weren’t so concerned about that, because the arts kids are much more likely to be OOS and live on campus, and have evening and weekend activities to keep them feeling connected. But it never hurts overall for a school to be a 25/7 community.
