3.4 1600 Chances at decent engin schools?

our school doesn't rank, fortunately. it would be pretty low, huron is fairly competitive school.

A 3.4 would obviously give you a better chance than a 3.1. Because of all your AP courses plus that U of Mich class (which shows you take initiative outside the classroom), you might have a chance. And then there's that 1600 SAT score. You'd better apply early though. I hear it is best for those with weaker academics and high SATs...

Also, yeah, try Cornell. Assuming they too only see the 3.4. MSU could probably be a safety...

Remember, I'm simply talking grades here. Your ECs are fine but you'd better write an awesome essay.

G'luck.

our school doesn't rank, fortunately. it would be pretty low, huron is fairly competitive school.

Would you possibly be in the top 25%? Top 50%?

i think I might make it into top 50%, but i'm leaning more towards 40%. sigh

oops i mean 40th percentile

wait 40% with a 3.4, are you sure?

If you have an upward grade trend, and reasons for lower grades in previous years, sure, you have a strong chance at great engineering schools. If there's no explanation for the poorer grades, and if your grade trend is constant or downward, I doubt there's much hope.

But since you took courses at UMich, I would supsect the grade trend is more upward, so that will have some nice weight. Your AP scores are awesome as well. You'll of course, need to be taking the most rigorous courseload available. If you're lacking in many of those necessary redeeming factors, your chances are far less than if you do have mitigating forces at work.

Joey

You may want to apply to CalPoly SLO as a backup school; nevertheless, your perfect SAT score should get you admitted into a few of those listed schools.

yeah, i'm at 40% with a 3.4 also; if they include 1st semester, i'd be at 30... :p

MIT has a reputation for seeing through grades to find true potential. Lots of very brilliant kids don't have stellar grades. Definitely give them a shot.

MIT has a few good things, not all academic, you know? hopefully i can get my act together enough to go there grad school... maybe even a transfer if something crazy happens. anybody ever heard of that happening? or am I just talking out of my butt?

Congrats on your UIUC acceptance!

U Chicago is not as grades-happy as MIT is, and places more emphasis on the essay, so I think you have a shot.

qqa don't mean to be mean, but i think they were a little too optimistic...... low gpa and high sat (unless you go to a hell of a competetive school) is a very bad indicator of someone who slacks off. If you had a rising trend, then you can make an argument

I don't know about Chicago. Berkeley doesn't look like it's gonna happen, especially because you're out of state. MIT, no.

thanks all, esp the reality check on berkeley. chicago, then, is a reach i guess. at least i know more about where I stand.

btw:it's safely established that my applying to MIT is just for the heck of it. I acknowledge that my chances are between zero and none. :-)

oh, and has anybody heard of the rumor that they used to give 20 extra points for precisely a 1600 on the SAT at University of Michigan?

ok, even thought this thread is mostly dead, maybe it'll be of some use to ppl later on. so far, i got into GATech, UM Engin, UIUC, and MSU. I got rejected from MIT. Still waiting on Berkeley, Cornell, and Chicago.

An aside, what you describe in terms of not being lazy but being forgetful sounds a whole lot like ADD. Have you been checked? If you are and get treatment, you'll get much better grades in college.

good call zagat i do have it. i don't like taking the medication, because i'm already a short-tempered person when i'm at home, so it really increases the tension around here. but i'm considering taking the stuff in college.

qqa, have you tried all of the different meds. It's very individual how each effects you. There's a new mild one, Strattera (sp?) that has done wonders for many. Really, it makes things so much easier when you find the right one. Good luck!

3.4 and a perfect SAT score w/ lots of EC's...

You know, I'm somewhere along those lines :)
