3.6 uw, 3.68 w awesome ec's? CHANCE for UChicago

basically I have a 3.6 uw gpa, most demanding courses this year. Messed up 9th grade with one B... and a couple of B+'s but I have nothing lower than a B on my transcript. 10th grade: all A+'s and 100 on regents except french (93). 11th grade (many B+'s and A's with A+'s) But senior year grades not up to par :( 3.59 gpa.. this semester trying to get a 4

Interned with NASA who selected me to work with them
research microbiology/biophysics
varsity track 4yrs
awesome essays i've been told and rec letters.

wanna major in physics.. A+ in AP Physics
what do you think?

It’s always wise to have happy safeties when your sights are set on a place as competitive at U Chi. The interniship with NASA would need to be spectacular (you did adult level work versus observing.) Likewise, the “research” doesn’t tell us much.

Rigorous classes throughout hs? HS rep for being demanding? Other stats and ECs?

yes basically i came up with a model for a future spacesuit and nasa is currently evaluating for current patents
HS classes: AP Bio, AP Physics C, AP lit, AP Macro, AP french,
SAT: 2050
AP scholar
any thing else? what do you think?

It’s definitely a mid reach for you. I have a friend with a perfect gpa and 2400 sat n 800s on all his sat2 with tons of leadership positions who was deferred from uchicago. So you never know but goodluck can u please chance me back

IMO. The Nasa is impressive, though it may become more so when and if they incorporate your ideas- maybe you can keep in touch with them (or return) to keep this active for grad school. Much depends on your hs rep. Wonder if your fuller stats/etc are on another post?

I am also the treasurer of a club in my hs and was the host of two events as well. I have about 100+ hours of volunteer service

Looking at the Early Action 2015 results thread as a great example, Chicago is really looking for high scores and GPA this year. Your SAT and unweighted GPA are just not good enough for UChicago. Keep in mind that the regular decision pool will be incredibly competitive and the acceptance rate will be somewhere around 10-11%, considerably lower than the EA admit rate.

Then again, if you write masterful essays which show how you will fit well at Chicago, then you may very well be accepted. Best of luck.

oh okay thanks for the advice on my essay!

The University of Chicago is a real “numbers” school which means it would rather take a person who has great academics and test scores than a person who has good extracurricular activities(not saying that they aren’t important either). I think you have a decent chance and I am not trying to discourage you from applying but I would suggest looking at other schools as well. Good Luck

I’m actually debating weather applying anymore…I don’t want to waste my time on these essays then get rejected. What do you guys think I should honestly do?

bumppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

Apply, don’t be lazy and not apply. You have a chance if you apply. If you want to go, apply. You’re chance is small so don’t get your hopes up too high, but don’t be passive and let it pass by, you never know…

Apply if you would regret not applying. Certainly, the NASA internship is impressive–whether impressive enough for Chicago to overlook your GPA, we can’t say.

No I was going too apply, I was just wondering if I really do have any chance…

You’re going to have a chance if you apply whereas if you do not apply, you won’t have a chance at all. The best thing you can do if you’re really interested in Chicago is apply. If you’re having doubts, seriously think about how much you like the school and if it’s really worth it to spend time applying. By the way, writing about your passion in physics could help make up for the lack of multiple ECs and lower GPA and SAT.

I know this reply is really too late to be useful, but at least if anyone stumbles across this thread they will not be misinformed by the blatantly incorrect information posted.

First off, I matriculated to the University of Chicago in 2008. Now, in the acceptance letter, one of the first things they say is something along the lines of “you were not selected solely on your numbers, etc, etc” (I can’t remember exactly." But the point is, Chicago is not a numbers school, especially when compared to its peer schools.

Obviously, it is extremely competitive to get in (It IS ranked number 8th in the world, what do you expect?), but I certainly wouldn’t not apply just because of one bad number. However, your chances do seem a bit slim because you have a rather low GPA and a rather low SAT score. But the admission committee really favors good essays (anyone remember the Uncommon App? lol) so if you blow them away with everything else, then perhaps you’ve got a chance.

But in the end, an education is really what you make of it, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get in where you want.

Good luck to everyone playing the college admissions game.
