What for you are the 3 US schools that are considered the most prestigious in the world (ugrad and dgra combined, of course because you cannot separate them when thinking of a school's prestige) ??

Harvard, Stanford, MIT

Harvard, MIT, Princeton

I have no idea what schools are "most prestigious in the world," as I have never traveled the world asking people which universities they consider prestigious. Personally, I've always considered Harvard, Yale, and Princeton the top three prestige-wise, but that doesn't truly answer your question.

Okay, well I'll just give you guys a personal experience. I'm from Russia and we came to American about 13 years ago. This summer we were in San Francisco on vacation (I'm from NYC) and we visited Stanford. My mom's first words were, "Is this a good school?" I can say that a 'common' person in other nations (Europe, Asia) that has some knowledge on Universities around the world can easily recognize Harvard, Yale, and MIT. Now I'm not saying recognition by researchers and other professionals that would have exposure to a great deal of knowledge about higher institutions, but just recognition by common people would probably be Harvard, Yale, and MIT.

Princeton not so much internationally--Princeton isn't known quite so much for its graduate programs. I'd say Harvard, Cal, and MIT.

Harvard, Stanford, MIT

Harvard
MIT
Yale
Stanford

Harvard, Yale, MIT

HYM

yup.

Yale

Princeton/UC Berkeley

Honorable mention: MIT, Stanford

Im surprised some people left off Yale. Clearly in terms of prestige worldwide, Yale cannot be denied. In terms of strictly prestige worldwide, Yale trumps names like MIT and and Stanford.

Come on, seriously? You are going to argue that Berkeley has a better international brand name than MIT or Stanford? Berkeley is a fine school, but come on, guys.

When I was younger and had no knowledge of relative university quality, the name Berkeley was much more familiar to me than was Stanford or MIT.

Sakky, even among the educated elites in Europe and the Middle East (I have lived most of my life on those two continents), Cal's reputation (among US universities) is second to only Harvard. Columbia, MIT, Princeton, Stanford and Yale are up there, but Cal (they know it as Berkeley) seems to be more highly regarded.

Not this again... berkeley trolls start 90% of the over 5 page discussions on here. can we have one thread that doesn't discuss that college?

Top 3 among Uber Elites:

Harvard-Berkeley-MIT

In the UK where I have spent a bunch of time not long ago, it was Harvard, Yale, MIT - plus the obvious bias for Oxford and Cambridge

Harvard, Yale, Princeton.

Berkeley doesn't belong on this list. Great school, but not worthy of top 3.

Top 25, absolutely. Top 3, absolutely not.

Cal more highly regarded than those schools? Boy, I wish that were true. But come on, we are talking about MIT, Stanford, and Yale here. From what I can tell (and I have rather extensive international experience also), Cal is not at that level. I wish it was, but sadly, it ain't so.

At every country I have been to (which is a lot), Berkeley has generally been seen as a place for people who, frankly, weren't good enough to get into Stanford. I wish it weren't so, but it is, sadly, so.

Look, nobody is saying that Berkeley is a bad school. I can probably go along with the notion that Berkeley has a stronger brand name than Columbia. But to claim that Berkeley has a better international brand name than Yale, MIT, or Stanford - that's just too strong of a claim.

Yet I find it interesting how so many of these 'uber-elites' gladly turn down Berkeley for Stanford. Or MIT. Or Yale.

We're talking worldwide prestige here, not actual school quality(which is obviously debatable). I would certainly include Berkeley in the Top 3 most prestigious schools (worldwide).
