As the title suggests, I have 2 teachers set up currently writing my rec, as well as an additional rec from a professor that I assisted in research. I am considering adding another teacher rec from a Latin teacher, but was wondering if it would be too much. The teachers currently writing my recs are a lit teacher and a history teacher. I feel that the lit teacher could write on creativity, the history teacher on hard work/dedication, and the Latin teacher, whom I have known the longest, could touch on a little bit of both, as well as demonstrating my interest in Linguistics. I feel that 4 letters may be a little overwhelming. I have not yet asked my latin teacher, as I am still debating on whether to add it or not. Any help?

Yes, I’d probably say that’s overkill. Don’t forget that you also have your counselor recommendation letter which would bump that number up to 5.

Generally, you only need around 2 letters from teachers and 1 from the counselor unless otherwise specified, and if you really really want to you can send in one more additional letter if you feel it’ll better help represent you (in your case, it would be your professor recommendation).

Here you can look at MIT’s, just as an example, thoughts on submitting recommendation letters.

As you said yourself - your Latin teacher would primarily write about what your history and literature teacher already covered, so it’s not like the rec would be covering too much new ground. You said you wanted to demonstrate your passion in linguistics - but remember that there are other ways in your application to show interest in a subject outside of teacher recommendations.

So personally, if it were up to me I would just forget about the Latin letter - but hey, it’s up to you.

Hope this helps!
