Question to Djean about rec

Dean J
My son is a junior and is already planning on which teachers to pick for the rec. He is taking Latin indepently out of school(his school does not have Latin) He is actually being taught by a professor at home since in my country there is only one univ where they have just few professors that can teach Latin and my son being a HS student is not allowed to take a course in the Unvi. So the professor comes to our home to teach. This professor is amazed with the work my son is doing.
Since most ask for two teachers rec I was wondering if he could get one by this prof. and another one from his school teacher. He will get probably a great rec from his HS but he believes one from this prof will be amazing. He is planning on having 2 more supplementary rec. Is it ok to have this prof. write one of the teachers rec. many people I ask have different point of view. We just dont want to burden the adcom with so many rec

So it will be like this
1. HS teacher
2 Latin prof.(as one of teachers rec)
3 HS counselor
4. Supplement from volunteer advisor
5. " " " a Professor he interned with for several summers

thank you

so you are planning on sending 4-5 letters of recommendation? That seems like way too many... I would only send 2 maximum... maybe 3.

I know the need to feel that the more recommendations the better chance you have but that is not necessarily the case, especially when UVa says they want the max of 3. There is no need for 5 because some of the same qualities will be repeated in all the recs. The 3 recs should give a variety of what the student is about, their individual qualities instead of being repeated. I know how moms feel about wanting their kids to get into the best colleges but also let your child have some or sometimes all of the responsibility and worrying. I know from experience that this makes me learn more valuable lessons. I hope this helps and good luck next year when applying!!! :)

thanks for your comments.

I really would like to know if his Latin prof.( who know him really well and who will probably give an AMAZING REC) can write one of the "HS teachers rec. instead?

If he can, then I would like to know what he should do with a part where it asks HS teachers to "compare this student with others in class". Should he leave that omitted with an expanation?
thank you

umm... well I applied this fall and my teacher didn't fill out a form or anything. He just wrote it, gave it to my counselor, who mailed it out with the counselor recommendation and transcript... I'm pretty sure that UVA doesn't say that you have to have a recommendation from a teacher. I think you only NEED to have one from your counselor and you send in any extra recs when your counselor mails stuff out.

thank you for taking your time to respond

We don't quote a "max" number.

One recommendation is required. You may send in as many as you want.

thank you Dean J
