I'm really considering dropping my third year of foreign language. My school offers Mandarin Chinese and I jumped on it right when I found out that could be my language elective. Unfortunately, the instructor (there's only one) is incredibly incompetent. I can speak very little Mandarin and write even less (like 5-10 characters off the top of my head), but I've still gotten As in Chinese I and II because he makes the class so easy and doesn't reinforce our vocabulary or writing skills. Chinese III is an online class (which I hate) and it's messing up my schedule. In order to take every class I want, I'd have to take Chinese III in a classroom with Chinese II students, and I'll just be taking the class on my computer without any other Chinese III students to speak with (it also won't be with any of my friends, but I guess that's not the truly important part). At this point, should I even bother? Only 2 years of foreign language are required in Florida, and if I drop Chinese III I could take advantage of my school's dual enrollment program and grab 3-6 credits at my local state college. The dual enrollment classes are actually really easy and not like taking an ordinary college class. What should I do? Are 3 years of language worth it even if I won't be able to speak or write it by the time I apply to college? I'm second in my class, a student ambassador, president of two clubs, VP of one, and I have 80 logged community service hours and counting.

I decided on dropping French after only two years. I lost interest in the subject, the teacher didn’t really help, and there were better classes for me to take. Personally, I think you’ll be fine, especially since it seems you already have a strong application. Most schools don’t even require three years, so I wouldn’t stress if you don’t want to take the class.
