30% cut means no more Vietnamese classes.

The Asian Studies department had a budget cut of 30% and Vietnamese was the only language completely removed. They cut from other Asian languages, but since Vietnamese only had one professor, the entire language was cut. (We have one professor that teaches an accelerated and non-accelerated class) It was not because of the students or the professor, simply budget. The Department Chair of Asian Studies is open to talk to anyone interested. In the future, if the budget increases, we might have VTN again. He'd love to continue it, but the budget is the big factor. The Department Chair and the Dean of Liberal Arts will be meeting on Wednesday, so let's make sure they know how much we support Vietnamese language classes!

So please, help fill out this petition. It will only take 2 minutes of your time. Thank you.

other colleges have eliminated languages…

totally dumb considering vietnamese are strongly represented here…

Yep. Just saw the Facebook group for it a couple of days ago. :(

I’m not Viet but I feel like they shouldn’t have done that…that’s removing an entire department by cutting one person.

I know…please show your support by signing the petition!!!

I understand the OP’s anguish about losing classes, but I don’t see how “support” from anonymously posted emails is going to have any effect whatsoever. UT clearly has budget issues and cutting Vietnamese was probably chosen as the best way to bring the department’s budget in line (perhaps because it impacts the fewest number of students?). It’s easy for people who are not footing the bill to tell UT to keep the classes, but it’s equally easy for UT to ignore such “input.”

They are voting for a resolution during Tuesday’s SG meeting so there is always hope.

Not to sound like a jerk but I’m not surprised they cut Vietnamese. After all, correct me if I’m wrong, but do non-native speakers take this class as well? There are a lot of foreign languages offered that are full of native speakers due to that ethnic population that speaks it being heavily represented at UT (e.g. Hindi/Urdu for SE Asians, Hispanics taking Spanish, etc)

Personally, I’m not a fan of the foreign language requirement, I would much rather spend my time working on another major in addition to my current one and or taking classes for my major.

Still, I can understand what the professor must feel. To save $50,000 she is being let go of and I feel sorry for her :(

Is Vietnamese still offered for Fall 2010? I see it in the course schedule, but I thought it would not be available next semester because of the budget cut.

It hasn’t been officially cut yet.

UPDATE: The SG has unanimously voted to join forces with us to try and keep petition to save Vietnamese.
