30 year old soon to be freshman in need of advice

I'm new on here and I came here for some help and advice. I'm just a bit freaked out and scared right now about whether I'll even get to where I wanna be w/ my plan or not.. so, here it goes...

I just turned 30, and I don't have any work experience. I have ADHD and bi-polar and I been living on SSI my whole life cuz of my disabilities and wasn't really able to focus before on jobs n stuff. I was basically just doing the fun stuff throughout my youth and was never really focused much on work.

But, now I'm trying to change all that and see if maybe I can pursue something from this point on. I got my GED and enrolled myself full-time at Broome Community College to major in Computer Network Technology, cuz I like computers and I heard it's a really good field to go into, and I start this Fall in August. Plus, I also signed up for the college workstudy program, but I'm not quite sure what that's all about. I mean, does the workstudy thing help find campus jobs?? Could it help build a resume and experience??? I mean, I know I'll probably be 35 by the time I graduate, but I'm kinda scared that I still won't get hired by then due to not having work experience, so I'm hoping the college workstudy thing will help. I'm very serious about this major, so could anyone please give me some advice, or if what I'm planning on doing is gonna help me reach my goals??

If I can pass a GED, I know I'll do really good in school. I'm not really worried about getting good grades n stuff, cuz I have total confidence that I'll do awesome in school. What I'm concerned about is if the workstudy program helps w/ campus jobs and helps build experience and a resume cuz I know that's what employers REALLY look for than just a degree, and if by the time I graduate, if I'll be able to find something related to the computer field major and get hired

Please, this is very serious. I just wanna know if, at my age, that I can still make something of myself if I do well in school, eventhough I have no previous work experience, and if the workstudy program through the financial aid system helps build up experience and resumes

Work-study does not guarantee the work-study position will be in your field of study. It’s a program designed for students on financial aid to gain work experience on campus - most, not all, jobs on campus are usually allocated to work-study.

If you’re looking for work experience directly related to your field of study, look at your college’s work-study positions as well as internships with off-campus organizations/companies.

Cool. That definitely helps. Thanks! I appreciate it :)

I can’t speak towards the workstudy part, but yes, you definitely can make something of yourself and get a job. I would look at yourself as any other college student. Nobody really has work experience when they’re in college. I wouldn’t expect you to be any different. When I was in community college there were people older than you, and they managed just fine. A lot of times they do better because they work a lot harder. Your age shouldn’t hurt you at all and don’t worry about not having work experience yet. Good luck.

Thanks, Flor!! I won’t worry anymore! I definitely appreciate the advice :D
