My short essay for UNC wound up at 348 words, and I don't see how I can cut it down. Is this okay? The instructions say "about" 250 words, also my long essay is 670 words, over the recommended 500 words. Is that okay?

Also, for my essays in general, should they be single, 1.5, or double spaced?

i think you really need to cut it down as close as possible. big public universities are probably more stingy about word limits because they have to read so many essays.

in my opinion i don't think going over the recommended limit of 250 and 500 by like 150 words is that big of a deal
when you have a recommended 500 word essay but your essay is more than 800 words, then you should probably cut down your essay length

They won't ignore your essay because it's more than 250 words, but read it over many times and select words/passages that you can cut w/o losing meaning. Getting your essay down to 300 words may even make it better. The essay itself should be double spaced.

Rainmaker when you say double spaced, do you mean we should send it in double spaced? Because that's my other dilemma (not that it's a big deal)
