So I am a senior.
I have 4 APs, where the only class I really get hw in is calc bc and us gov. I have no daily hw in lit or com sci. So far, it’s been a breeze and I find myself with a lot of time, even though I am doing tennis too (ends in oct). I do also have college apps to do but that doesn’t take hours everyday.
I want to add in a job, since I have time. I could probably do 2 hours every day. My local QFC has job openings right now, so should I go for it? I am also considering for volunteering at a hospital, for 4hrs a week.
Education is the most important thing. Getting a job, volunteering, and ECs are all excellent for college resumes, but what it comes down to is your GPA. Thus, I would concentrate on that more than anything else. Participate, volunteer, and work, but make sure it does not get in the way of you getting your home work and studying done.
I agree with @TheCollegeGeek, grades, grades, grades! You haven’t hit the tough, balancing act of the AP classes yet. Really naive to think you won’t have writing assignments in AP Lit. You are supposed to be writing daily, or, your school is doing you a disservice for low scores on your AP tests come May.
How did this become related to ECs? I am genuinely asking this for myself, NOT for college.
You can call me naive, but let me clarify: I have already taken and completed 7 AP classes (Physics, Biolgy, English Lang, US History, etc). I also took 4 APs last year, with a 4.0 GPA and all 5’s except one 4 on lang on AP tests. I know how tough APs can be.
But to answer your question, no. I did a 90 hr internship, volunteered, participated in various orchestra activities, all in the last year.
I never said I won’t have writing assignments; but I quote my lit teacher (again, since you missed it in my original post), “there will be no daily homework in this class”. I think I made it sound like everything is gonna be easy; that was my mistake. But based on my past 3 years of APs and honors courses, I wanted to try working, and came on here to ask people with experience, not those who automatically go all condescending because they automatically assume I am an incompetent teenager.
Was I supposed to give you all my stats for you before you can seriously consider me as an able person, looking for a job so I can get things for college with my own money, rather than leech off of my parents? But no, you just had to stereotype me as the dumb hs senior.
I apologize for the long rant, but I hope I got my point across.
The volunteering seems like it won’t be too much of a burden, and I think the job hours are pretty reasonable as well. I say go for it, if you’ve gotten 5s in almost all your APs , then the ones you’re taking right now won’t be excessively difficult for you. Maybe make sure there’s some flexibility in case you do feel overwhelmed.
