can Dartmouth students take 4 classes a quarter instead of the usual 3?

you can only do it a total of 3 times. When you register, your register for 3 classes you can add your 4th class after everyone has registered

However, taking 3 classes a quarter will still allow you to graudate on time, right?

3 classes is what they meant to do! this guy wants to fast track (which i think is not a great idea) enjoy university life man!

Dartmouth has a different system than a typical quarter system. That is, even though the calendar is quarter, students take courses that are equivalent to semester courses. That's the reason for taking only 3 courses per term as opposed to 4 or 5 courses at a typical quarter system schools. For example, if a med school requires a year of chemistry, you'd take 3 quarters of chemistry at a typical quarter system school, but at Dartmouth, you'd take 2 term courses (just like 2 semester courses). D-Plan is not a quarter system.

Yes, you can graduate on time by taking 3 classes a term.

yes, taking only 3 classes will still allow you to graduate on time

i don't want to graduate early as Newbyreborn said. I want to explore al my interests and challenge myself. In all likelihhod, I'll probably stay an extra year.

I'm jinxing myself to the fullest. My chance at Dartmouth is already slim.

i read that you can take 4 classes 3 times without permission. After the initial 3 requests you have to ask your academic advisor or whatever. Am I right? And if I am how difficult is it to get permission?

Pennstergo,

Dartmouth pre-med curriculum:

I think you can do it without permission, but you have to pay extra tuition.

Trust me, three Dartmouth classes a term is more than enough of a work load...you'll want to use all of your free time to explore other interests, be they athletic, social, extracurricular, or academic through clubs instead of classes.

agree with Xanatos... taking 3 classes is MORE than enough, esp. if one of those courses is a lab science, seminar w/ lots of writing or a language class w/ drill. plus, 1st-years can't take 4 classes until at least winter term (I think?)... unadvisable, especially since there are so many other (more interesting) things to do on campus.

bottom line... you'll probably either end up doing worse in each of the 4 classes or have no social life. or both.

according to dartmouth web! pre-med can have 1-3 classes per term?

Math 3 is the prerequisite for Chem 5. If you don't meet the requirements for Math 3 either through Ap or placement you must take math 3 or math 1 before you can take Chem 5 (you can take math 2 in conjunction with Chem 5 depending on your grade in math 1).

i'm a bit confused

can someone post a sample schedule like sybbie's but in a different format?

When you register, as a first year student you can register for 3 classes (if you are not assigned Englsh for the fall term) than the 3 classes can be anything you want. If you are assigned english 5 (or english 2 depending on your SAT verbal & writing scores) the fall term then you can choose 2 other classes of your choice.

Here's my schedule for this year

Fall: First Year Seminar
Physics 13
Math 11

Winter: Bio 15

Art History 2

Spring: Chem 6
