I was a bit surprised that only four courses a semseter are offered at RPI. According to the internet, At most eng schools, students take five courses a semester. Some, such as WPI, have even more, with six a semester.

Are RPI students getting less of an education, or do the courses go more in depth to make up for the smaller amount of courses? Also, can you take more than four courses if you want to?

You should look more at the number of credit hours as opposed to the number of classes.

For example if you are taking 4 classes that are each 4 credit hours that is 16 credit hours. You can take 5 classes that are each 4 credit hours equalling 20 credit hours. I believe full time at most colleges is anything above 12 and usually not to exceed 23 (maybe 26). Some classess are only 1, some are 3, depends on the amount of class time.

My daughter had 16 the first semester and 20 the second. The 20 credit hours was 6 classes. Honestly with 20, you are going to be working your you know what off, and then that is provided they are not all technical in nature. You won’t be getting anything less :)

WPI has 7 week terms - 3 courses per term. 4 terms
Not sure what the length of a semester is at RPI, is it a semester or trimester?

RPI uses the traditional semester system.

Many students end up taking 18-20 credits per semester (especially after the first semester). This generally corresponds to 5 classes.

Once you’re ready to take graduate level classes, you can take up to 7 such classes a semester without passing the 21 credit limit (as most graduate classes are 3 credits).
