...says that a 4 or 5 on an AP foreign language test will place you into L5 to start in freshman year, but the freshman handbook only mentions that a 5 will place you into L5. which is it?

if it's only a 5, is there a way to take a placement test when you get to campus in the fall to place into L5?

It probably depends on the language. Most mainstream languages do have placement tests during Camp Yale which is used to place you. This includes Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian (I think). Always feel free to discuss with the DUS and/or professor about any special circumstances.

Yes, take a placement exam for French if you think you can go ahead and skip into L5. It’s mostly just a listening test, with multiple choice questions based on the recordings you here. It’s sort of a difficult test but easy to get placed in a high level. I thought I completely failed and was placed into the highest class in the L5 range. You don’t need to do all that well to be placed in L5.

Hopefully we’ll be able to get out of classes at 9 AM every day of the week haha. Also, does anyone have comments on the Intensive versions of the classes, at least for Spanish?
