4 states, 4 schools

Hi, I move a lot! My dad works for the government and they constantly move him. I've been to high school in 3 states now and just found out I'll spend my senior year (moving in November during school) 2000 miles away on the east coast. I was wondering if this effects my chances of getting into a good school? I have a 3.9 GPA unweighted and always been in the top 10%. I didn't do so well on my sat, because English isn't my first language. Do you think I could get into UVA, Emory or something similar? Why or why not?

Well, with your gpa, theoretically.

But you need much more than a GPA - SAT or ACT, subject tests, APs, course rigor, ECs, etc.

Go talk with your guidance counselor today about getting everything organized. If you move in November, that will pose some special challenges. It might be best to get all of your applications done early so that your letters of rec can be sent before your move. Your counselor canalso help you determine the best way to deal with your transcripts.

If you know now where you will be living after the move, you may want to pre-arrange your class schedule to make for a smoother adjustment. Moving before school starts in the fall or at the end of fist semester might make things better for you. Any chance of that? How close are you to graduating from your current high school? If you can finish the requirements by the end of the fall semester - or if you can do them online - that could simplify things.

I agree with happymom about getting your apps in before your move. While moving around a lot isn’t a “hook”, it makes your application stand apart a little. It might help explain or compensate for weak ECs. I can’t see it being held against you. Good luck with your apps and your move.
