4 years of math required?

Hello

I have contacted the CMU office about their 4 year math requirement, but all they say is remember that most applicants will meet this requirement.

I only have AP statistics and AP computer science left in my school. The CMU person told me for SCS, it is not worth it to take Statistics, and she basically said my options were to take a community college class, nothing, or Statistics, in that order. I finished Alg 2/ Trig, Precalculus and Calculus BC at my school.

Will having only three years of math + computer science hurt me in the process? I can't take a community college class due to football and I am hesitant about dropping the sport.

Can you take an online course through the community college? Most offer linear algebra or calc 3 as an online course. If you have your heart set on CMU, you should find a way to try to fit another math in.

This question was asked last week by another person.

You have 4years-- aleg, trig, pre-calc and calc -it’s all on your high school transcript. It doesn’t matter that it was taken while in 7th or 8th grade.

DONE.

I don’t know the answer - it seems to me that even without “four years of math” you have more math than at least some other applicants. Don’t see how it could hurt you that you took Calc BC before your senior year. It seems, as Mom of 2012 and 2014 suggests that you have this “problem” because you were advanced in math when you started high school. I’d hate to think that admissions folks would penalize you for that.

Mom of 2012 and 2014 - don’t be so certain that what he took in middle school will show up on his high school transcript. In our district - a high school teacher comes to our middle school to teach the advanced kids their freshman and sophomore math classes. Because the class is taught at the middle school, it does not show up on the high school transcript. (It used to, when the kids used to go to the high school for math). Same class, different location, same knowledge - but not on the transcript.

^ yes we do not have our middle school classes on our transcripts.

You’re really ok here.
You’re missing the point- it doesn’t matter when you took it-- if you got through to CalcBC that’s what they are looking for. They don’t need you to go find another math class. That said, if you stopped taking math end of sophomore year and maxed out- they will ask how else did you challenge yourself - why didn’t you take another AP or a local college class. It’s all about how you challenge yourself with courseload in each of the four years. There are certainly many other students at CMu (and standford, mit, etc) who have taken all their science and math by end of junior year. A blank senior year of “fun” courses is not a favorable courseload and frowned upon even if that advanced.

Just sayin’ don’t get hung up on counting the number of years. Show that you have continued to challenge yourself and took all the math offered in your school.

As mentioned, “four years of math” for CS really means “through calculus.” You’re fine.

That said, it couldn’t hurt to get ahead, either by taking a linear algebra course (probably more useful (and required) for a CS major than multivariable calc), or, better still a discrete mathematics course, if its possible.

Also, even as a math/CS major, I do find myself occasionally wishing I knew more statistics, as it’s not really feasible to take probability/stats here till sophomore year. But then I haven’t heard the best things about AP Stats…

Thanks for the advice everyone

Again, I do not wish to ditch football because I have already missed every single summer workout so far due to my job. I don’t want to end my relationship with my coach on sour terms. Thus, I don’t think I can take a CC class.

However, I understand that I need to show that i have challenged myself. This will be a bit difficult and I hope that I can convince them that AP Comp Sci is literally the only class I have left. If anybody still thinks I absolutely must take a CC class, I will think about it some more, but the consensus seems to be that the 4 year requirement is relative.

Thanks again!
