I am also a winner of the entrepreneurial scholarship. I just googled one of the mckelveys and this page came up. I also won for having a landscaping business. I live in pittsburgh pa and i am going to college at Slippery Rock University outside of pittsburgh.

let me know what other kinds of business you guys have

By the winners it seems that mckelvey people are old fashioned. They picked businesses that children could start in their neighborhood. I mean geez, if I said I owned a multi million game publisher company they still probably wouldn't accept me.

Oh, and last year I made 9 thousand of my business and other random websites through advertisements. Awesome cash when only in highschool.

By the looks of it I know three people that received it who have their own respective tech companies, and one person who has a landscaping business. Also, they don't judge the business ... they judge the entrepreneur.

Money isn't everything - but I will say that my business does do fairly well.

The people I have talked to that own web hosting businesses that won this scholarship all have multiple websites and ventures that they have done. Now, I can't speak for the McKelvey's, but I think that they wanted demonstrated entrepreneurial experience in a number of different ventures - at least that's what I accented on my application. Furthermore, I think they were looking for diversity: they wanted some old-fashioned businesses and some online businesses; they wanted to create an interesting experience for us so that we could learn from each other.

This is my personal philosophy about the scholarship - regard it as you wish.

im really sad about the mcklevey thing.... i know you cant count your chickens before they hatch but i had already counted 40k...... i did not even get to the interview....im really not sure why cuz my business is a lot more legit than a website or landscaper

You have a great niche market cc, and a great knowledge of the market as well - that's definitely a recipe for success. I agree that they are looking for diversity in businesses too.

Don't feel bad: It's not like I've never faced rejection before; none of us can win everything. I like the article today about admissions being a crapshoot - that's my theory on all competitive colleges and top scholarships.

If you can't handle rejection, maybe you should seriously think about your entrepreneurial spirit, since an entrepreneur is a person who takes risks and loses A LOT! (At least I know I do!)
