Is anyone else applying for this? I learned about it at the Honors Colloquium this past summer, and from what I can tell it will be super competitive. I don't know anyone else who is applying for it though. I've already been admitted to McCombs and I'm just finishing up my app right now.

Any thoughts on how difficult it will be to get this? I heard they'll only accept ~10 students since this is its first year...

Haha yeah I’m applying, but I’m not expecting anything. I’m sure it will be insane. I wonder how many people will make it to the Finalist Weekend there. Do you think thats where they will do all the interviews and stuff?

Yeah they said 10, with plans to increase it a lot every year.
It’s probably going to be insanely competitive, seeing as there’s enough spectacular kids at UT to make honors alone very difficult to get in at times, and at least 25% of kids will apply I’d reckon.
I think something like 50 will make it to Finalist Weekend maybe? That’s where the interviews will be done though, yeah. They’re trying to do the same thing as UT Dallas with the McDermott Scholarship, so you could google that to see some parallels if you want.

Y’all seem to know more than I do. I wasn’t aware of any Finalist Weekend, although I guess it makes sense that they would want to interview you pretty intensely before giving you a full ride. Any idea when that will be? I just submitted my app, but I’m definitely not expecting anything.

“Earnings from the endowment will support 300 students (75 per class), making this one of the country’s largest merit-based scholarship programs.”

@ellipsis:

“If selected as a Finalist, you will be notified by mid-March 2011 and must attend Finalists weekend at UT Austin March 24-26, 2011. (Your transportation to Austin and housing for 2 nights will be provided.)”

10 is correct for the inaugural class. It is in the letter that was given to the students the the UT Honors Colloquium this sumner. After that, it will be 75 but right now it is not fully funded.

^^Very disappointing that Texas Exes didn’t make that clear on the application. What a waste of everyone’s time, expecially the poor teachers who had to complete those god-awful recommendations.

yes, this scholarship is kind of modeled after the mcdermott scholarship at ut dallas. just basing off of the competitiveness of mcdermott, this 40 acres scholarship is going to be even more competitive based on the shear number of people who will be applying

So this year there are supposed to be 75… finalists? Or do you mean 75 people who actually get the scholarship? What are the chances that you’ll get the scholarship if you’re a finalist? I want to know if a flight down to UTexas is worth it if I actually am one.

From the email they sent out: “Once all finalist spots have been secured, an email will be sent to all applicants. This process could take a few days.”

So what I’m guessing is that if you do not receive a call from them about a finalist spot, then get an email, that you did not become a finalist.

I applied, which is supposed to make me eligible for the 40 Acres Scholars program, but I haven’t been getting any emails about it. Is there some sort of mailing list you have to sign up for? Also, do we know how many Scholars there will be this year?
