5 College Majors On the Rise

It's almost impossible to avoid news articles about the latest, hottest (and, often, potentially most lucrative) college majors, and commonly, one such list won't remotely resemble the next.

Yesterday, The Chronicle of Higher Education featured their roster in 5 College Majors On the Rise by Karin Fischer and David Glenn. It began like this:

For the most part, tomorrow's bachelor's-level majors will look very much like those offered by colleges today. But in interviews with The Chronicle, academic experts, business analysts, and economic forecasters helped identify five emerging areas of study.

You may not be able to read the article without a subscription so I'll list the Chronicle picks below. If you have a burning desire to see the whole story (so you can figure out what some of these really are!) send me a Private Message with your email address so I can send it to you.

1. Service science **
*2. Health Informatics *
**3. Computational science

4. Sustainability
5. Public Health

The Chronicle story also mentions some colleges by name where such programs are offered. Most of the schools included are NOT the Usual Suspects on CC.

Are these new names for old majors? Interdisciplinary majors?
They may have been cooked up by marketing people.
Will students be able to “sell” these majors to prospective employers?
Buyer beware.

Can you describe these further? As well as the resulting career path?

And the colleges as well?

I found the full article via googling…try this:

Taking college majors that are “on the rise” sounds a lot like jumping in on a fad. This is particularly foolish as fads in academia don’t translate to employment in the real world.

Service science? This sounds like a joke.

The other four majors sound legitimate (3 of them are already existing graduate programs.)
