Hi. I live in Central America and will travel to California in the fall. Some time ago I was told that the luggage weight limit was two 50-pound pieces! I was thinking in taking all my underwear, t-shirts, polos, shirts, sweaters, pants, belts, and shoes. Im shoe-size 12. Three tennis shoes, two casual shoes, and a pair of sandals would almost fill one bag. If the other bag is filled with clothes, where am I going to put the pillow, sheets, towel, notebooks, soap, shaving cream, deodorant, (I do not know where de list ends.)
Im going on almost full finacial aid. I (my parents) would like to buy as much as possible in my country with my currency.
I know Im not asking any specific question, but Im sure you know what Im trying to say.
I used to go climbing volcanoes. The advice was: pack as light as possible. My trips were three days the longest. Would this advice apply to a four (not sure if coming back for Christmas) or nine-month trip?

lets just say i will be bringing 20 ****s 6 jeans/pants 5 jackets and 10 pairs of underwear to UK and ur # sounds reasonable but lets just say we will have loads of fun doing some washing later on

if you're going to go to college.. i don't think the advice would be pack as light as possible (since you or your parents want to you buy as much stuff as you can in your country). but yes, it is almost impossible to bring all you want in just two 50 pound luggages. what if you shipped the stuff over to the school? if that is too expensive, then i guess you really just have to buy things in cali. what else can you do? maybe if you just packed the essentials and everything else buy in cali.

Can you try to ship some (LIGHT!!) things over? Like perhaps, some of the extra shirts? Also, even though things may be relatively more expensive here, some heavy/bulky things may not be as expensive as you think. If you get a decent campus job (say 12 dollars) , you will more than likely be able to afford budget-priced shampoo (1), conditioner (1) , deodorant(3), shaving cream (3), and a good set of notebooks (3) and pencils (1) in just an hour’s pay.

For the love of God, things are going to be infinitely cheaper here than they are in your country, just buy whatever you need here, and with the dollar crashing against just about every other currency, it’s getting cheaper by the day to buy things in dollars.

I don’t know how it is in Central America but in Europe everything is more expensive than in the States.

For example I bought a pair of Nikes in the US and had them shipped here. From eBay. They were new and had the factory price. The same shoes here costed 120. In the states they cost $90. SO whatever symbol you have in front of the number doesn’t really matter. Almost everything is cheaper in the States. Also know what stores to go to. Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s are really awesome stores that sell unsold things from other stores. You can find jackets from Quicksilver that usually cost $60 for $10. If you want to save even more money on clothes etc. go to Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s.

I can’t see why you need that many t-shirts (you will probably get quite a few more here from clubs etc.) unless you’re not planning to do laundry (which it seems like you will need to every 15 days). Pillows/duvets should be bought here; they’re bulky and inexpensive but take up loads of luggage space. Bring the sheets if you want a touch of home or something. There are also lots of Ross-esque stores and factory outlets here which would probably tempt you to buy their cheap clothing.

One thing I would suggest, if you have them, is a pair of decent shoes in case you need it for whatever reason; much easier to have them on hand than to run out and buy a new pair.

And don’t worry about deodorant/shower stuff - they’re sold pretty cheaply. And if you buy them here, you don’t have to worry about them leaking over all your clothes.

Pack your clothes, shoes in a big sturdy duffle bag. Luggage is too heavy(cutting into the 50 lb weight limit) and bulky -difficult to store in your dorm room.
