5 weeks. How to improve from a 27 to a 30-31?

Took the June ACT and got the following:
33 M
27 E
25 S
21 R
9 Essay
27 composite.

How can I up my reading and science to both around the 28 range, English to about a 32, and essay to a 10?

I recommend the PR: Cracking the ACT w/o DVD. My English from went 26-29 and reading from 25-33 after one read through (According to their practice tests anyway).

For science, imo, you gotta get use to the section so I suggest the Red book

I used Cracking the ACT for a week or two prior to the June ACT. Got a 28 on the Reading practice test because of the strategies it presents, but couldn’t do the same on the actual thing.

I have the Red Book as well. I’ll use that for science.

The key to the ACT is time management. Work with an egg timer set to 5 minutes less than the alloted time for each section. With the reading section, read the questions first (not the answers), then read the entire paragraph focusing on what the questions are asking. Ditto with science section.

^ I bought a watch with an electronic screen. Do not get an egg timer, simply because you cannot use something like an egg timer in the real test, and you actually have to have muscle memory to remember when to check your clock the best, and it actually builds time perception much better. Trust me! I am a living example of someone who went from a 26 at the beginning of junior year to a 32, retaking for 32+.

I find that it’s worse to even look at the clock. O_o I just take it, without looking at the clock and I feel less pressure.

Using an egg timer worked for my son. He took the test in June and scored a 36 composite the first time out.

the timing is my main problem. looking back I got a 30 composite (everything was 30 except for reading:28 and English:31) i KNOW that my reading was lowest because I am not used to the timing. I hadn’t studied or practiced at all before I took it and I felt very rushed and pressured especially with both the reading and the science sections. The worst part (for me) is that when I was looking back at my report, I got everything right on the science section up until the last chart because that was when i had like 2 mins left. I just rapidly glanced and circled. I got half of my guesses right. So I will definitely try the 5 minutes less timing. Especially because i tend to make stupid mistakes when i rush :/

that sounds like me!

i would defintely have classmates help you. if you know someone who scored like a 34 or something, you should ask them for some help, some pointers and what not. also, look at PR, it should help you and also just look at the Red Book!

Good luck!

Yeah, study up on English with “Cracking the ACT”.

Also, those sections giving you trouble can be tough to get up.

I think you should just look at the Real ACT prep guide if you haven’t and go over those sections intensively.
