5-year coop phase out?

I read on another board that NEU has stated they are going to phase out the 5year coop program. I find that hard to believe. I did read that there is a 4-year option w/2 coop sessions instead of 3, but I did not think they would be phasing out 5-year coop. I thought it was more of a choice.

Also, do you find that most kids on coop live on campus or move home or get apartments?

Don’t believe everything you read on these boards!

Last fall when Northeastern made the announcement about the 4 year option, some students (and alumni) flipped out. The 4 year option has been available in many majors for some time. The announcement was just to publicize this option. I think they have extended the option to most majors now.

There is no intention to phase out the 5 year option.

I was told at the end of the freshman year the student will choose between the 4 and 5 yr options. They are no way phasing out the 5 yr option.

Ditto to Tom, there has always been a 4 year option. There has been talk of the school wanting to advertise the 4 year option more, but students/faculty/alumni are all really strong advocates of keeping the 5 year plan standard. I don’t see it changing anytime soon, there would be WAY too much resistance.

As far as the on/off campus question, it’s probably pretty split, but off-campus is cheaper and offers a lot more freedom. Once you’re 21, 22, and working full time you start feeling like a real human and aren’t as in to dorm life… so living off-campus is pretty appealing. Freshman/sophomore year most people live in dorms, 3rd year is probably split, and 4th year most people have moved off. It really just depends on your personal preference and how much $$ matters.

An alumni newsletter I received explained this further. It was noticed that on campus tours etc., as soon as some students and parents heard that Northeastern was a 5 year school, they immediately crossed NU off their lists of potential schools.

By publicizing the 4 year OPTION, it is hoped that students will consider Northeastern further. It is expected that once such students enrol and get involved with coop, the 5 year option will become more appealing.

Just because NEU was a 5 year school, it doesn’t mean that you pay tuition for 5 years because you’re going to be on co-op. They still pay for 4 years I believe, like a regular 4 year college. That’s what I learned from the Welcome Day and Info Sessions. So people shouldn’t be eliminating NEU from their list. Idk, this doesn’t affect me cause my program is 6 years and I’m still going to be paying the same amount as for 4 years worth of college, for the first 4 years including co-op.

@simply…

You are correct. But is was feared that as soon as some applicants heard “5 years”, they would say no way did they want that extra year. Also, the parents would have tuned out before they heard the explanation that regardless of duration, they still only paid 8 semesters tuition.

It was felt that having the 4 year option mentioned would keep the attention of these applicants until they heard or read about NU and its programs.

For some families 5 years could be an advantage for FA, adding an extra year of “2 siblings in college”
