50% acceptance rate??

Why is Michigan considered a top school when it has a 50% acceptance rate?

Just curious

Read this thread.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/525913-we-call-university-michigan.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/525913-we-call-university-michigan.html</a></p>

Question. Why is UChicago considered on par with the top ivies (HYP) and privates (Stanford, MIT) despite its 35 or 40 percent acceptance rate?

It's a big school.

Maybe Michigan applicants are just more self selective than ivy league applicants. A lot of people probably just apply to the ivy leagues thinking it's a lottery but really have no chance at getting in.

42% acceptance rate this year

Plenty o' reasons why U-M has an acceptance rate in the 40s.
Because it's public.
Because it has a relatively large undergradute population.
Because of the misperception that you have to be affluent to go here (which drives some potential applicants away)

Also, if you break out OOS and IS (which you can't...it's not published)...I think you will get a more realistic picture of it's selectivity.....If I had to guess (and this would just be a guess), In state is probably upwards of 55% and OOS is somewhere down near 28-30% (if not lower this year).......ANyone else have a guess on that????

yeah out of state its very tough to get into michigan

I'd guess ~48% for instate, and 33% for OOS.

I agree with rkbgt. People who apply to Michigan are more self aware, meaning that not many people who are significantly deficient in their stats apply to Michigan. Furthermore, in the case of where I live, Michigan has a slight negative reputation on financial aids. I personally got a very good Finaid for OOS and proved my counselor wrong. IMO all public schools are underrated, and Michigan doesn't even really function like a public school, it is self sufficient.
