50% ....tuition, scholarship, ride, what's included?

My daughter was informed today that one of her 2012 teammates, who recently signed with a top 20 rowing school, received “50%”. Her teammate did not elaborate any further and my daughter did not ask for clarification for me, so here I sit inquiring for the answers from the informed. So, what does the “50%” mean? BTW- The term did not include “Scholarship” or refer to a “50% ride”, just “50%”, as if everyone knew the value of the offer. Is it a reach to assume that 50% includes tuition only, or perhaps tuition, room and board, books, et al? One of her other stud friends was told on a recruiting trip that top recruits are told to just show up with just a toothbrush and everything else would be covered. I am sure the tutoring, uniforms, academic adviser's, etc, is extended to all team members but I was hoping to quantify the terms prior to speaking with any coaches and recruiters.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

It’s can be either and unless you ask directly you won’t know. Some schools give a % of just tuition. Some a % of everything, some give set dollar amounts, some get academic aid and pose it as athletic money. It varies so much pending the school and program, best way to know is just ask directly.

In my DD’s sport it is common to get 1/2 scholarship. That means that you either get your tuition paid for or your housing, books, etc. I don’t know that they line item everything out specifically but if the school cost of attendance is $20,000, they take $10,000 off your bill with the scholarship money.

In D1 women’s rowing the school is allowed up to 20 full scholarships. That includes tuition and fees, room and board and books. Coaches generally divide it up into partials. Covering 50% of the kid’s total cost of attendance would count as a half scholarship in the eyes of the NCAA.

But coaches are salesmen, too. He could tell the kid, we’re covering 50% of your tuition (no room and board or books) which may only be 33% of the total cost of attendance - so the program has only used 1/3 of a scholarship on her, but she can tell her friends she got 50%. But my best guess would be she probably got 1/2 her COA covered.

As an aside, coaches will sometimes give a choice whether you want the scholarship as a percentage of costs, or a set dollar amount - go with the pct. Tuition and fees seem to rise every year and if you choose the set $ amount, it becomes a smaller percentage as costs rise.

Normally, I’d say 50% covers 50% of everything, i.e. tuition, room, board, books (but not travel and personal expenses), so you still need to bring a little more than a tooth brush. However, what parents and kids say about “recruiting” and “signing” can cover a wide range. My impression is that much of it is confidential information and is up for negotiation with the coach.

beenthere2–I agree, that actual dollar amount is rarely discussed because some kids get more than others. It really would be like us asking “how much did you make at your job last year” :D.
