500 word long essays (MIT and Caltech, specifically)

I can't reduce my essay down any further... it's impossible. I have 850 words. what am i to do? submit it as is, or do you think it's fine?

850 is obviously way too long for this kind of essay. most colleges will let you go even 20 or 30 words above the limit, but 350!?? that's ridiculous. maybe you're trying to say too much in your essay. narrow it down and focus on one specific thing instead of making it a really broad essay.

whoops... thought this thread wasn't posted. sorry (repeat thread)

Could you post your essay? That way I could read it and help shorten it. It might help to shorten 100 words at a time. Make sure you aren't using passive voice, or redundant words like that or which or who.

Actually, if it can fit on one page, they usually wouldn't care. They don't actually sit there and count the number of words. They say 500 but mit is very laid-back in almost everything regarding the application. If it's a great essay, and not 850 words of ABSOLUTE GARBAGE which will bore the admissions people to death, then keep it. It's not worth losing the quality of your essay just to fit into the 500 word limit. However, if there are portions of your essay which does NOT need to be there or need to be stressed so much, do consider taking them out.

I’m an MIT and CT admit pm me I’ll be happy to review.

^^I don’t know how much good that would do as I think the OP has probably graduated from college by now.

Ahah, epic thread revival.

What do they call those bumps on posts that are over 5 years old? Nuclear bump?
