650 -> 750 approx. CR - possible? Any help/advice/tips on how?

Really do need it.
I have a couple vocab problems (as in, I've come across just about every word on the SAT, but never bothered to look each and every one up. So it's all familiar but never clear, which doesn't help at all) but that can be remedied, I suppose. I also almost always get like 2-3 questions per section wrong on those long passages, and it's not for lack of comprehension, more like I miss some small detail due to rushing or something like that. I have generally no problems in Math and Writing (should manage an 800 on both next time) but CR is really just being a major pain in the *** and I really want that 750. Is Barron's/the Blue Book enough? Just practice? Or should I try some methods?

At any rate, I'd really appreciate some tips from anyone who's really good at CR. I know some of you can get an 800 without pouring a sweat so I'd greatly appreciate any input, useful or not :D Trust me, it helps.
We could get this going into a CR help thread with enough posts.

Any takers?

Thanks in advance :)

I went from 700 to 780 in one test.

It’s possible

Mhm, don’t get discouraged. I improved by 90 points in a year. Mostly, I just did practices from the Blue Book and SAT Questions of the Day. If it’s because you miss small details, read the passages more carefully and play the devil’s advocate. Make sure you can find something in the passage that supports your answer.

Yes, devil’s advocate helps a LOT.

And don’t think too deeply. That was my worst problem before

it’s certainly possible! I jumped from a 700 to a 750 – not quite as big a jump as you’re aiming for, but I did this with no studying at all. That’s one of the flaws of the SAT, I suppose. So much of it is dependent on random things like the questions on that particular test, how focused you are that day, etc. but anyway, you can definitely jump 100 points! just PRACTICE :)

By devil’s advocate you guys mean barring wrong answers right? I already rely on that a lot when the answer’s not right up in my face…

Oh and I don’t know what it is, but I’m still getting an average of like 10 wrong every 3 sections on the CR tests in Barron’s (which plain sucks). I did the January and May tests, and I may be wrong here, but Barron’s tests are like 3x harder, no? They have like at least 3 questions at the end that are so general that you need to re-read half the passage to make sure of your answer. Definitely getting the Blue Book, but can anyone confirm or deny on Barron’s?

Damn vocab too, I always say “I should memorize like 50 words today” (which isn’t that hard a task, actually) except I never do it. And I only have a month. Not to mention some words just don’t stick. Ever. I can’t tell you how many times “indigenous” popped up, til I realized that 1- it’s a really easy word to figure out, and 2-I already knew it from before. There’s like 3 other words that I KEEP seeing everywhere (lyrically, wistfulness, prosaic).

Doing like 2 practice tests a day though :slight_smile: Just wish I was seeing a better score increase. Getting around the same amount wrong each time. And tactics generally don’t help, it’s just straightforward reading and answering with me, with the occasional underline and marking. I tend to read the questions first now though, to focus on the parts where they ask about, rather than rereading the entire passage to find it (usually, I could read any passage and then be asked something about it and remember where the answer was located, but SAT passages are just plain annoying and sometimes I find it hard to focus because it can just be so boring.)

good luck, its possible but requires effort
