70 things I learned in my first semester at Michigan

What’s the point of arguing over whether we should call a certain kind of beverage “pop” or “soda?”

“Michigan sounds like Animal House maybe my kid should do Cornell engineering instead.”

Michigan is what you make of it.

I am an engineering student and school work is taken very seriously. Not everyone goes out and gets drunk.

There are plenty of people who spend a lot of time studying and doing school work.

“Will I be able to escape calc II if I pass the BC AP exam?”

As ThisIsMichigan pointed out, you need a 5. That’s not as hard as you think.

According to [AP Calculus BC Test Score Calculator - AP Pass](AP Calculus BC Test Score Calculator - AP Pass)

You can get 68 points out of 108 and that will give you a 5. If the Calc BC exam is similar to the AB Exam (I only took AB), then it shouldn’t be that hard to get a 5.

Also, if receive AP credit for a class and think about taking it anyway, DON’T. USE YOU AP CREDITS. AP credits allow you to graduate early and take a smaller course load per semester.

People complain about paying upper level tuition sooner, but it’s certainly worth it.

bonee, this is the experience of ONE first semester freshmen. I know several Michigan students who would write completely different lists.

I also know Ivy league students who would write just as party-heavy of a list.

Gentlemen, I hope I meet guys like you during the February Campus Day instead of “Vomit Man”

Your kid should choose where he wants to go to school.

Is there a limit on the number of AP credits and dual enrollment credits you can cash in on? I heard something like that by word of mouth but couldn’t find anything definitive on the official website.

For #24, I reccomend https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mbus-bus-info-for-university/id777435172?mt=8

And that’s not just because I made it :)

^I saw this on the Michigan Hackers page. Looks awesome and I look forward to using it next Semester!

Doesn’t that app already exist?

I use the Magic Bus app and it works just fine.

This seems exactly like the Magic Bus app…

Yeah, there’s a bunch of them, but some are better than others depending on how well its programmed. Plus, this one was updated for ios 7, and not all of them have done that yet, so props to potus123.

“Is there a limit on the number of AP credits and dual enrollment credits you can cash in on? I heard something like that by word of mouth but couldn’t find anything definitive on the official website.”

I believe there is. Don’t quote me on it, but I believe it is around 60.

@romanigypsyeyes there’s the mobile website, which is a bit antiquated, and slow, and there’s another Magic Bus app called U of M Bus. There’s also an update for the one I made coming out later today or tomorrow that’ll show all routes servicing each bus stop with the option to get a notification when it’s arriving. This is all for iPhone, btw. The Magic Bus Android app is good, and does a lot of the same things.

Also, it’s all open sourced on Github: https://github.com/jonahgrant/mbus

Oh man! I want to play around with that API. Btw, potus123, going to Mhacks 2014? Should be a lot of fun!

I plan on attending Michigan because I fell in love with the school when I visited & I have been a Michigan fan for years. I always thought that I wanted to attend a big school, but now that I think about it, bigger school = more beer = more parties.

I have nothing against parties, but I don’t want to fall into that peer pressure of “It’s just one drink, blah, blah, blah.” Someone close to me died because of his drinking habits, so I just want to stay away from that.

This could be a struggle, but I have heard that you will always find a group for yourself at big schools…

Absolutely, Michigan is so much more than drinking (Theres a reason why our school is ranked so well in Academics). From my experience, there actually isn’t that much pressure to drink unless you’re in a frat. Most people will respect whatever decision you make.

And there is so much you can do without drinking. #30

The nerve of them!

At IMRP23, there are plenty of things to do aside from drinking.

Also, I have gone to a few parties and I was never pressured into drinking. You can still enjoy yourself at Michigan without drinking or going to parties. The “typical” college party is overrated anyway.

@wolferber there’s a ton of awesome APIs the University has. There’s even one for washing machine availabilities (available, in use, out of service). I was actually just thinking about MHacks. I’m from Chicago (still in high school) and I don’t know if I can make the commute to Detroit. Would be a ton of fun, though.
