Freshman's Guide to Dorms...

Since I was a freshman last year and have been to almost all the dorms, I thought I'll give a laydown here so we don't get a 10000000 topics about whether Markley, Bursley, etc. are good or not...

Central Campus (the ones I know about)

MoJo - most recently renovated dorm. has AC in each room. Honestly, its not as much of a big deal as people say cause you can just have a fan in your room for the rest of the dorms. Also, as freshman you have to be a part of the residential community there (its like a research thing) and i've heard mixed things... that its a pain in the ass and some people like it as well. Its on the hill and the "Hill Dining Center" is at the back of MoJo. Everything LOOKS great but the food is pretty *ty. Personally, I think its extra *ty cause the good appearance almost tricks you into thinking the food is tasty.

Markley - on the hill, one of the best i hear. food prolly not the best but awesome place to meet freshman. all-round good dorm.

Couzens - on the hill, no dining hall, gotta go to MoJo. havent heard bad things.

Alice Lloyd - on the hill, havent heard bad things.

South Quad - prolly one of the best dorms. has really good location to a couple frats (Chi Psi, Phi Psi, SigEp, Shady, etc...) as well as the Union.. its like right on State Street. lots of restaurants nearby too. This dorm (besides Bursley) probably has the most diversity... LSA Honors students (most of them) are housed here; there are also Engineers, regular LSA, Ross pre-admits, and athletes (from what I hear, vball, track, and some others). Food....not so good.

West Quad - pretty much all football players. pretty nice.

Oxford - haha god forbid.. its really small and really far away from the rest of the dorms/campus. if you live here, just suck it up.

East Quad - where you stay at orientation.. funny cause its one of the ****tiest dorms and a great (sarcasm) way to let freshman know what a cool university this is.... food is really crappy at orientation but much better during the year (only time i ever ate here besides orientation was on St. patrick's day with some drunk friends, food was good and yes, i was sober and the food was good)

NORTH CAMPUS
forbidden...

Bursley (where I lived freshman year): Honestly, probably one of the best dorms on campus. the bus ride from north isnt bad at all... you get off at CC Little and all your freshman classes will be a building or two away (dennison, randall, east hall, and econ in lorch hall). Also the best dorm in my opinion to make friends. Andddd a lot of diversity. Also the Blue Apple (a little restaurant/convenience store) is probably THE BEST on campus. REALLY good fresh pizza, subs, smoothies (kinda suck), etc etc. Food at the dorm is also prbly the best (relatively). Also make friends with Sexy Grandpa.. hes one of the servers. hes awesome. you also get to experience the late night drunk bus (on thursday, friday, and saturday nights)

Baits
On north campus. its more private but REALLY unfriendly, no one keeps their doors open, etc. Gotta walk to bursley to eat at the dining hall so most kids here have a lot of food in their rooms. bus stops here as well. suck it up. this is like the oxford of north campus.. kinda.

Hope this clears it up for a lot of you.

Thanks for the info. Could you tell me a bit more about West Quad? I was really surprised I got that one, since I heard it was pretty much reserved for upperclassmen and athletes.

how far away is oxford? i dont want to be in a ****ty dorm : (

I was a freshman last year too, so i’ll add a little bit to what you already have.

I’ll agree with your bit about north campus; it’s really not too bad. i had a few engineering buddies who lived on north and i’ve visited them quite a few times, and the bus ride to/from north to central isn’t bad at all. the stops drop you off at convenient places, and for the most part all you need to know is to get off at cc little. blue apple IS really good. i’m also a fan of victors (which inside MoJo on central), but blue apple is much MUCH better.

@Brosen14: I lived in south quad, and also had some upperclassmen friends who lived in west. the two dorms are almost the same, and since you’re an incoming freshman i’d very happy to be placed there (ESPECIALLY if you’re non-honors; i wasn’t but got placed into south quad). the food is pretty good (in terms of dorm food anyway) for the most part, but like Predator mentioned, it can be really bad sometimes. every dorm will serve some sketchy food at some point, though. In terms of location, south and west quad are the best. i’ve gotten away with showing up to class on time when i’ve left my dorm really late quite a few times. living around athletes can be interesting too. for example, i’ve seen tate forcier (an early enrollee for the football team), among others, eating at south quad quite a few times.

Probably the only downside to south/west quad is that it is mostly upperclassmen. MoJo/Markley are mostly freshmen, so it is much easier to find/make friends with fellow freshmen there. Generally everyone on campus is pretty friendly, so i wouldnt worry about that one too much, though.

I can’t say much about alice lloyd/oxford/couzens/east quad because i’ve never really spent a good amount of time there during the year. I’ve actually heard that the food in east quad is almost inedible, so hearing that it is good from Predator is news to me.

Hopefully somewhere in my block of text you can find something useful… lol. But really, pretty much anywhere you’re housed, you will be fine, so don’t stress about it too much.

Thanks for the info, man. I’m definitely excited about West after hearing such rave reviews. I was praying for the hill, but this sounds even better.

i got into Baits II…

I got into Baits II too…

Baits II is closer to Bursley than Baits 1. It’s like a 1 minute walk from Baits II to Bursley. Baits I is even farther away. You guys will learn to adapt. I knew plenty of people who lived in Baits who used to walk over to Bursley to eat… its fine.

As for Oxford, I wish I Could tell you more but I’ve never been there. It’s supposedly far away. However, I knew several sorority girls who lived in Oxford who managed to go out and party 3 nights a week… so obviously, if there is a will to do things, there is a way haha.

Aryl, food was TERRIBLE at orienation at East Quad; however, like I said, the only other time I went was for St. Patrick’s day… and maybe they decided to cook better that day? Haha…

Also, a BIG HEADSUP: living at south quad/west, you might think its real cool to meet the football players. you’ll even see some of them at a lot of frat parties like Tate (one of our new QB’s), Anthony LaLota (d-end), and Mike Cox (running back). However, in my personal experience, its really not that big of a deal meeting them, half of 'em are d-bags haha, but I guess its fun to tell your friends “hey i saw brandon minor!”

Oh I also forgot to add that the biggest rooms on campus are in South Quad, West Quad, East Quad, Oxford, and Bursley (yes… bursley haha, since soooo many people here dread it but by the end of the year, you will love it). The smallest rooms I’ve seen are in Markley.

Also, those of you on North Campus have access to the Duderstadt library, which is without a doubt, probably THE best on campus (and then comes Hatcher, the graduate library0. The UGLI kinda sucks cause theres A LOT of socializing going on haha.

What about Barbour?

haha yeah you’re right, some of the athletes ARE jerks. it is interesting seeing some of them ultra-hyped up on ESPN or the news, or what have you, then standing like 2 feet away from them. i’ll admit though, after a while you will stop noticing them and it won’t be that big of a deal.

@hp7260: Betsy Barbour is very classy. my friend invited me and a few others to a tea party and showed us around, and everything looked nice. the rooms are great size-wise. if you dont mind living with only other girls, i’d say it’s worth looking in to.

I also just finished my freshman year. I lived in MoJo. IT IS OVERRATED. The rooms and bathrooms are extremely nice and its nice to live very close to a dining hall but the social scene in MoJo has to be one of the worst on campus. Not everyone in there is in a learning community but like 90% are. If you are a freshman, cross your fingers and hope to land in markley. You’ll make the most friendships there. It is a crazy place where anything is liable to happen lol.

aw, i wish someone could tell me more about Alice Hall because that’s where i was placed.

me too! any info on alice lloyd or hssp?

I haven’t heard any bad things about Alice Lloyd. I had one friend who lived there last year as a freshman… he’s returning again this fall there.

You think it’s possible to swap from Baits to Central/Hill?

S got assigned to a “double room in triple suite” Baits 2. On the positive side, it looks roomy, with a study area and it’s own bathroom (though he would have preferred to walk down the hall to the communal bathroom in a traditional dorm.)

The contract doesn’t say which building in Bates 2 he’s placed in. When do you know which of the houses you’re assigned to? Any clue?

If Bates isn’t really friendly, can’t those residents hang out at Bursley a lot since the dining hall is there?

Do all the dorms, including the houses like Bates, provide some kind of social programming for freshmen?
