Some of the idioms come naturally...if your native language is English. If not, I suggest memorizing them.

for the essay, is it okay if i make up stuff?

Yeah. Go ahead make things up. I don't know whether to go as far as to make up a historical or an event in a book...but I've heard that it has been done.

any still need help I'm getting like 8 wrong on each test and thats because i can't stop the hard mistakes like idiomatic and etc please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some stuff that helped me out was that i would read the sentence and just look at the sentence and think "is that somethin i would write in a paper of mine, and if not, what would i change about it" and just go from there. best of luck guys

bump !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My essays are generally 10-12 quality for the most part, but I never have enough time to write conclusions. They're usually 1-2 half-*ssed sentences - do you think that's okay?

How trusty is the 2010 Kaplan book? I usually score around 770+ in my other practice books for writing, but when I took the Kaplan test I scored only 740. Sometimes I doubt if Kaplan is even right.

For example, can you put “that” right after a comma? I thought it had to be “which”.

Damn people I did like a THOUSAND practice questions for the WR section and guess what.I did 2 errors on improving paragraphs and so far I know about 1 error on ‘‘improving sentences and a possible error on identifying sentence errors’’
It is funny how all my hard work turned useless .Still,I hope for a great CR and M scores so that when I retake in Oct and got 760+ on WR my super score will be 2200+

you should be able to be (almost) absolutely sure of an error when you see one. if you’re not sure, put it as “no error” or whatever and then go back and review all the questions you marked as no error. sometimes it’s easier to see the second time.

and there really are only a handful of rules you need to look for.

writing, I didn’t study. my essay sucked so I’m upset about that. MC? i got all of em right, no studying whatsoever. it’s all about the insider secrets. I owe it to my amazing english teacher.all that’s left it to work on is my essay

edit:my teacher was a grammar nut and i aced his quizzes. once you know the proper and logical constructions and uses, you’re golden

@Sylux God: Technically you’re right, but you probably won’t see that rule tested on the SAT.

Hey I normally miss around 3 or 4 questions, and I got a 8 on my last essay. How can I improve my score to a midd 700 or 800? what and how should I be studying to make sure that I miss less mc questions?

Use the collegeboard blue book…its the best

I personally like preparing from the Barron’s practice books and then doing a few Collegeboard “Blue Book” papers. The following lists have been compiled from personal experience. (Went from a 700 to 800 in writing with the October test)

On essays:

 1. Find a couple of good events from history and types classical/popular literature.
 2. It helps to constantly listen to the news on the radio/TV because the more recent essay topics on the exam could’ve been answered with really well with current news.
 3. Check out sites like TED because they have wonderful videos that can be applied to various SAT essay topics.
 4. Whenever you do a practice essay, ask someone else to read/critique it.
 5. Many people say you should have three examples as support of your thesis statement, but it’s probably better to come up with 2 examples that are explained thoroughly instead of 3 that are slightly rushed.
 6. When using an example from a book or event, don’t narrate the entire story/event. Just make a simple statement about what part of it you are talking about and then explain how it relates to your thesis.
 7. Hooks and parting gifts are useful.
 8. Basically make sure it’s gramatically correct, uses good vocabulary without sounding “presumptuous,” and just make it an entertaining read.

On Multiple Choice:
I’m afraid I’m not much help here. On the last test, I focused mainly on math so I think I just got lucky with writing. But it helps to be really calm during the test and say the sentences out loud (in a whisper obviously, or in your mind…that works too) if you get stuck. You’re going to have to pace yourself and go kind of quickly since you have to complete more than one question per minute. :)

If you get immersed into the W issue, believe you are a VERY GOOD EDITOR, and have English as your native language, you will boost up your score!

For the Essay: Being an American = Knowledge of -at least- 3+ historical events. And if you aren’t an American, so go ahead and know some American historical events. You aren’t asked to fully memorize the great Declaration Of Independence or to REALLY know EVERYTHING about the Harlem Renaissance or such!! Just know some historical figures, read some FAMOUS stories and improve your grammar BY WRITING AS MUCH ESSAYS AS YOU CAN. Few hours ago, I was viewing the essays I’ve written in Sophomore year and I can swear that a toddler can write better than them!! After practicing A LOT of essays, I did really good work.

For the MC: PRACTICE WHENEVER YOU GET A CHANCE and soon, without mastering lots of rules, you will find yourself viewing the question from the view of the ETS examiner himself/herself!!

P.S.: Though, I haven’t, yet, elevated to an 800, all my errors are FULLY contributed to my FOOLHARDINESS!!!

I got an 800 writing by focusing on two major aspects:

Become a grammarian. Learn all the important grammar rules and edit any erroneous sentence structures in your head. Also, read quality literature by authors with flawless grammar.

BS hard on the essay. CB doesn’t fact check, so just pick a side and defend it by all means necessary. It doesn’t matter what you use forexamples, just make them fit your argument. Make sure you write as much as possible (it’s only two pages) and add as many details as possible, even if you know they are completely wrong, as long as they add to the argument.

Couple that with some practice and anyone should be good for 700+.

learn your grammar rules!!! (Barron’s 2400 is good for this)
read the sentence corrections SLOWLY (its amazing how many simple errors like subject-verb disagreement you miss by rushing through)
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!
For the essay, the MOST important thing to do is to fill the space provided (I cannot stress this enough, it is stupid i know but it really works. I wrote a well-thought out essay that without filling up the space and scored a 9. I wrote a BS essay that filled the space and got a 12.)

Say you got all the MC right. How would the Writing score change if your essay was a 12 11 10 or 9?
