800 Verbal- Study Tips

Yeah, I think it was "verbal 750+....something..." Don't really remember. Sorry, but I realized I didn't have anything different to say once I started replying...laziness...my bad. >_<

The point still remains that the best way to boost the verbal ("critical reading") section score is to READ, READ, READ, and READ. That day-by-day habit helps the math section score too. Turn off the TV and video games and read something, almost anything, and read more tomorrow.

Good luck on the tests.

i really don't like reading much...but i suppose i could force myself to do it...like half an hour or an hour a day seem ok? i donno why, thr is just very few books that i have ever gotten into or enjoyed thoroughly.

This thread is exciting,I'm gonna pull it up.Can just a lot of reading definitely help one score 800 on the critical reading component?

read read read is one of those things you cant do at the last minute and hope to somehow do really well on your SATs.

I strongly reccomend just reading what interests you (but not clifford books) and thats it.

Im also against memorizing vocab. its no longer a big deal since analogies are gone.

I wouldn't worry too much about vocab lists. Instead build your vocabulary by reading. This will help you get used to seeing the word used in context as well.

well i've been reading the paper everyday for 2 full years. yet my reading skills still suck, luckily, the sat's ain't like those language arts reading tests

I definetly think you can seriously boost your verbal score simply by reading. Memorizing vocab is out. It's essentially a crapshoot of whether you get words in the fill in the blank section that you know. I've simply read all my life for pleasure rather than a chore. I got an 800 doing a few practice tests the days before the tests and reading my entire life.

Lucky you who are fond of reading.I regret not reading that much before. Now I have only one month and a half to prepare for the SAT ,what should I do in this situation ?Reading or practising?

if i were you, i would just despair because you dont have enough time.
NO im just joking, seriously
im in a similar situation as you
im mostly worried about verbal, especially the passage-based readings
i practiced those questions using grammatix's methods and they helped.
so i think the best way to prepare for the october test is just simply to prepare with real sample tests.
and go over every single question, even those you got right. think about why or why not you got the questions right.
theres 6 more real tests (actually 4 more) if you register for collegeboard online course.

I stopped for a short while right after seeing your first sentence, cjsathos, even though I had already been rather hopeless.:)).Thank you for your advice, though ;) ;I do not seem to have another choice.:(

Well I hope my post won't be questioned just because I have a 770. :(
Anyways I peruse the first two paragraphs and skim/almost skip the rest until i reach the last two paragraphs; i start to peruse again. Then i read the questions like THREE times each. Then do the problems. Then check again about twice or so.

For the short ones read VERY carefully. The whole thing is important so u can't venture to skip a SINGLE word.

cjsathos I object to ur post. I had a score ranging in the late 600s about two weeks before the test. However, I was able to practice a very effective strategy in two weeks and bump it up to a 770. EVERYONE DO NOT LOSE HOPE!!! ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. JUST GET GOOD STRATEGIES AND PRACTICE THEM. GOOD LUCK. :)

may i ask.. what was ur very effective stratedy....???

That was my effective strategy however the specifics r on RocketReview. I would say that RocketReview was very helpful to me since i was as desperate as u guys were. I used the CB blue book to practice and that all worked out.

o ok thanx....i think it works best when i just dont read the passage at first and do tht method whole jumping back and forth method. its really helpful but it kinda scares me as well...i dont even have the blue book but i guess ill just make do with kaplan...:(

for the verbal I looked over a list of words that ere "commonly used on the sat" and did some test from 10 real sats (the new book), but besides that if i were you i would just read...a lot. i think that is what works the best

dont study vocab

use strats

get 800

elodie,

GET THE BLUE BOOK!! Do NOT use the Kaplan book; the passages and questions are not representative and they are often easier than the real thing.

^^

strange. I did a set of kaplan's CR from the new 12 prac test book, and got like 9 wrongs. I did a set from the blue book and got 3, did it right after kaplan.

Joe,

I have not examined the new book in detail. It may be that the questions are more ambiguous than the real SAT questions. Let me know how you perform on future sections.
