I've been using an TI83+ for nearly 4 years now and it's fine, but I want to take Math2c and I heard that an 89 does the factoring for you =). So, is it worth it? Obviously, I'm not buying an 89 just for the SAT Reasoning Test, but that will be one of my main reasons. I'm taking the test either June or fall of next school year, so I should have plenty of time to get used to it.

The bad thing is, all of my teachers use 83's or 84's (basically better 83's) so I'll have to figure out some of the calculator tricks on my own... but I don't really mind seeing that there's a manuel. Main problem: Is an 89 (titanium) worth it if you already have a decent graphing calculator?

The TI-89 is not worth it unless you are taking calculus or above. I own both models but I used a TI-83 on the math IIC because I wasn't familiar with the 89 at the time; TI-83 worked just fine, and I got an 800. Don't spend $150 on a calculator just for one special feature. The perks you get from that one special feature are outweighed by the learning curve of the TI-89.

Definitely worth it. Many times I have found the storage space of my TI-89 inadequate. I just wished they had the Titanium when I bought mine.

Seriously it is the best thing you can spend your money on if you like math. It takes a while to learn, but once you do, you can solve basically anything. Highly recommended.

I'll be taking Calculus next year. So... so far, the answer is yes. lol

yes, it would have helped me out SO much if i had my own TI-89. so, i am going out today to buy the titanium version (since the school lends them out... but you cant take them home)

I never had a TI-83/84, so the first calculator that I bought was the TI-89 Titanium. I have to say, compared to my friends calculators, it's amazing. The pre-loaded applications are really good, too; I especially like the polynomial root finder (solving quadratics and above..) and the simultaneous equation solver (helpful when your required to use matrices to solve two equations).

do any of ur friends have an 89? Then just borrow it from them for teh sat. When u take calc next year, buy the 89 then just incase they make a new model or something. Personally, I'm taking the math 2c in may but my school lends out 89 titaniums so i'm just borrowing it from there.

Yes, my friends do, but then I'm... awful... with new technology so I want a couple of months to familiarize myself with its uses. How often do new models come out?

My parents just said yes I can get an 89 if I want to. =) I think I will because if I'm going to need it for next year... why not just buy it a few months ahead of time?

But icyfire, how often do new models come out? It would suck to buy a 89 Titanium and then have the 89 Platinum come out or something...

I'm in calc AB at my 84 has worked good, and work great for the IIC. I will probably also use it for BC and Stat next yr.

I got it for the IIC and while it was really helpful, I ended up using the 84. I think you can use both, but i didnt feel like bothering the proctor. I have found that it is way too slow for using external programs but the functions accessible from the home menu are ingenious. Pure calculations actually take longer on an 89 than my 84+, but the 89 can calculate numbers like 2^200. There was a matrices question on my IIC test and i would not have been able to use the 89 to solve it, its matrices, i find are way too cumbersome compared to the 83/84. It is worth it though, especially to check your answers in math class. Oh and if you do buy it, buy it on ebay. I got mine for 100 plus $10 shipping, new.
Basically anything accessible from the home menu is a godsend. Everything else i find too cumbersome to use in a test setting, compared to 83/84 programs.

dude, icy, your school lends out ti-89 titaniums? what the hell. rich school man, lol.

our school is rich enough to only lend out ti-83s. :(, and were a governor school, which just makes the story sadder.

LOL...the TI-89 Titanium came out about...I think, nearly 10 years after the TI-89 (regular version) was released? Haha...I don't think you have to worry about new calculators replacing current models.

Hmm...now that I mention it, I think there is a serious problem with this industry. People who know there are other graphing calculators besides the TI-83 are rare. With HP basically cutting their calculator department and barely producing a new model every decade, and Casio not producing any new models for a while, TI has a monopoly on their hands...

Let me just say this.... after my first one got stolen two weeks ago, I'm going out to buy another one even though I can't nearly afford it... (I still have an 83+)

Strictly as far as the SAT goes, this calculator is not worth it... it's nice, but it's really necessary for class, and if you're gonna take calc..

Yes - absolutely - there are functions on the 89 that will allow one to tear up the SAT math section. The SAT OS designed for the TI-89 and Titanium covers almost any formula/equation/concept involved on the SAT. For more information, please refer to this post:

I think the SAT OS takes too much time, it is easier just to do all the stuff by hand.

TI deserves their monopoly. My teacher told me that TI collaborated with teachers to design a calculator that people besides engineers could use. That is why their calculators are successful.

Titanium is a very good calculator.
very fast, great new functions...

And it integrates and differentiates functions.. finds limits..
even prime numbers..

its one of the best calculators i have ever seen..

get it.. its worth the money..

although TI-83 is also a good calculator..

U can work faster w/ TI-83s though since its less complicated...

i would personally like to own both..

TI-83 for simpler tasks and computations
TI-89 for calculus and math competitions (w/ calc. allowed)

Gigante: Which parts of SAT OS do you think are too time consuming? I'd really like to know so I can improve it. Thanks :)
